High school roundup: Nine-run inning sparks Trinity over South Fayette

Kylie Poland and Emma Morgan each homered as Trinity outlasted South Fayette, 13-10, in a Class 5A Section 3 softball game Thursday afternoon.

The Hillers blew the game open with a nine run bottom of the fourth inning to take a 12-2 lead, which was put into jeopardy with a late surge from South Fayette (3-3, 6-5).

Bailey Bell and Cam Meier both doubled for Trinity (4-1, 7-2). Marlaina Bozek went 2-for-3 and drove in three runs. Sloan Altman also had three RBI.

The Lions, despite a four-hit day from Mara Iagnemma, had their four-game winning streak snapped.

West Greene 12, Mapletown 0: McKenna Lampe went 3-for-3 and was a triple away from the cycle as West Greene defeated Class A Section 2 foe Mapletown in five innings, 12-0.

Lampe drove in four runs with her three hits. Madison Lampe also had three RBI with a single and a pair of doubles for the Pioneers. Kaitlyn Rizor had two doubles and Anna Durbin triple for West Greene (4-0, 7-3).

Jade Renner dominated on the mound, surrendering only two hits and striking out 10 in three innings for the win.

Hannah Dusenberry doubled for Mapletown (2-1, 4-1).

Bentworth 16, Beth-Center 1: Leah Lindley did damage at the plate and in the circle for Bentworth as the Bearcats cruised past Beth-Center, 16-1, in a Class 2A Section 3 game that only needed three innings.

In her two plate appearances, Lindley had a pair of doubles, and drove in five runs. She also earned the win with six strikeouts and surrendered no earned runs.

It was the third win in the last four games for Bentworth (2-3, 5-6).

Beth-Center (1-6, 0-6) had five errors.

Carmichaels 15,California 0: Kylie Sinn threw a one-hitter and struck out seven, and hit one of Carmichaels’ two triples as the Mikes defeated California 15-0 in a three-inning non-section game.

Sinn, Shelbee McCann and Emma Holaren, the top three hitters in Carmichaels’ lineup, combined to go 6-for-7 with six RBI. McCann also had a triple. Emily Menhart and Mia Ranieri each contributed a double.

Carmichaels is 6-3 while California fell to 1-7.

Frazier 11, Charleroi 1: Logan Hartman threw a three-hitter, struck out 11 and also hit a double and triple in Frazier’s 11-1 win over Charleroi in a six-inning Class 2A Section 3 contest.

Kathryn Barch went 3-for-4 with a home run for Frazier (5-1, 7-1), Emi Curcio triple and Rylee Evans had a double.

Frazier plays a key section game Monday at Chartiers-Houston.

Charleroi dropped to 2-4 in the section and 4-4 overall.

Baseball

Jefferson-Morgan 7, Avella 3: Easton Hanko, Liam Ankrom and Owen Maddich all hit doubles as Jefferson-Morgan downed Avella, 7-3, in a Class A Section 2 game to end a two-game skid.

Bryce Bedillion earned the win, striking out five batters in 5 1/3 innings for Jefferson-Morgan (2-2, 2-6).

The lone two hits for Avella (2-3, 2-4) were on a pair of singles from Nick Pollock.

Chartiers-Houston 8, Beth-Center 6: Destin Weiser broke a tie game with a two-run triple in the bottom of the sixth inning as Chartiers-Houston edged Beth-Center, 8-6, in a non-section game.

Weiser’s triple, which scored Alex Siege and Josh Colletti, ended a four-run sixth for the Bucs in which they erased a two-run deficit.

Austin Kuslock and Colletti each had a pair of hits for Chartiers-Houston (6-2), winners of its last six games.

Dominic Fundy went 3-for-3 and hit a home run off the scoreboard for Beth-Center (3-4).

Fort Cherry 5, Bentworth 1: Fort Cherry scored two runs in the first inning and never trailed with Max Paterni on the mound, defeating Bentworth in a Class 2A Section 1 game, 5-1.

Paterni, who went five innings, struck out five and surrendered his lone run in the second inning.

Shane Smith doubled and drove in three runs for Fort Cherry (2-2, 5-4), which ended a three-game losing skid. Josh Holder had a pair of singles for the Rangers.

Isiah Russell and Justin Kisner each doubled for Bentworth (2-2, 5-4). The Bearcats committed seven errors.

Monessen 13, West Greene 11: Monessen scored the final three runs of the game, over the final two innings, to rally for a wild 13-11 win over host West Greene in Section 2-A.

West Greene (3-2, 5-3) led 6-3 after three innings and 11-10 after five before Monessen (3-1, 4-4) tied it in the sixth and pushed across two runs in the seventh.

Nate Lynch was the winning pitcher with 3 2/3 innings of relief. he struck out only three but each came in the bottom of the seventh.

Monessen’s Vincenzo Rhome had a double among his three hits that went with four RBI. Zach Evans scored five runs, Jack Sacco doubled and Nathan Lynch had a double.

Cory Wise tripled for West Greene, Joey Reed and Caleb Rice each had a doubled and Hunter Hamilton had three singles.

Canon-McMillan 10, Brashear 2: Brycen Virgili went 3-for-3 with a double and cam Weston hit a solo home run as Canon-McMillan cruised to a 10-2 victory over visiting Brashear in Class 6A Section 3.

Canon-McMillan (3-1, 7-3) scored six runs in the bottom of the first inning and five Big Macs pitchers combined on a six-hitter.

Casey Burke, Matt Cottrail and Jay Quinque each drove in a pair of runs for Canon-McMillan.

Waynesburg 5, McGuffey 4: Luke Robinson led of the top of the eighth inning with a single, stole second base and scored on a single by Kyle Blasco to give Waynesburg the lead and the raiders held on for a 5-4 victory over McGuffey in Class 3A Section 3.

The extra-inning win moved Waynesburg to 3-1 in the section and 4-2 overall. It was the first section loss for McGuffey (3-1, 4-3), which rallied and scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings.

McGuffey pulled to within 4-2 in the seventh before Jake Orr hit a two-out, two-run single to tie the score.

Jesse Johnson had two hits and scored twice for Waynesburg.

Ryley Metheny was the winning pitcher in relief.

West Allegheny 17, Trinity 2: Logan Malatak drove in four runs and West Allegheny remained the only team with an unbeaten record in Class 5A Section 3 by defeating Trinity 17-2 in five innings.

West Allegheny (5-0, 8-1) scored the game’s first 10 runs and belted six extra-base hits.

Brandon Robaugh went 2-for-2 with a home run for Trinity (3-1, 7-4), which was dealt its first section defeat.
