High school baseball roundup: South Fayette wins, 15-14, on bases-loaded hit batsman

Eli Snider was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth inning, forcing home the winning run, as South Fayette rallied to beat North Hills 15-14 in a Class 5A Section 2 game on Thursday.

The slugfest, which featured 22 hits and 10 errors, was tied 10-10 after three innings. North Hills (1-4, 2-9) held a 14-13 lead in the bottom of the seventh but Nolan Lutz’s two-out single scored Christian Gabriel to force extra innings.

Winning pitcher Ryan McGuire threw three innings of relief and hit a triple for South Fayette (3-2, 5-3). Nolan Vertullo doubled and drove in three runs, as did Lutz. Richie Dell also had a double.

California 12, Avella 1: Jordan Kerns went 4-for-5, homered and drove in four runs to power California to a 12-1 victory over Avella in a six-inning Section 2-A game.

Payton Conti went 3-for-5 with a double and two RBI and Nate Zemany went 2-for-4 with a double and drove in three runs for the Trojans (2-4, 3-6). Jacob Swartz went the distance, striking out 9 and walking no one.

Chase McAlpine doubled and scored a run for Avella (2-4, 3-5).

Carmichaels 11, Bentworth 1: Carmichaels pounded out 15 hits in an 11-1 drubbing of Bentworth in a six-inning Section 1-AA game for the Mikes’ sixth straight victory.

All but one starter had a hit and Matthew Barrish and Gavin Pratt each drove in two runs. Zake Hillsman, Drake Long and Dylan Wilson each hit a double. Long and Al Cree each scored twice. Winning pitcher Steve Spehar struck out three and issued no walks in five innings.

Bentworth is 3-3 and 6-5.

Ringgold 6, Elizabeth Forward 1: A five-run second inning boosted Ringgold to a 6-1 victory over Elizabeth Forward in a Section 3 game in Class 4A.

Koby Bubash drove in two runs and Dylan Wujcik and Sam Daerr each hit a double for the Rams (5-1, 7-3). Wujcik and Daerr each had three hits. Chase Angotti went 2-for-2 and Bobby Boyer 2-for-3.

Andy Kalup drove in the run for Elizabeth Forward (3-4, 6-5).

Montour 5, Trinity 3: Trinity scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to force extra innings but Montour used a two-out, two-run single by Dylan Deutsch in the eighth to edge the Hillers 5-3 in a Class 5A Section 3 game at Ross Memorial Park.

Trailing 3-0 entering the seventh, Trinity (3-3, 7-6) got its first run on an RBI triple by Chad Johnson. A.D. Nelson followed with a single that scored Johnson and made it a one-run game. Clarence Pomykayla’s two-out single scored Nelson and sent the game to the eighth.

Jax Banco had a double for Trinity. Winning pitcher Logan Persinger and Gannon Kadlecik doubled for Montour (3-3, 7-7).
