High school roundup: Walk-off win lifts Burgettstown over OLSH, into 3rd place
Hayden Abbott singled home Madison Kozares with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning to give Burgettstown a 6-5 walk-off victory over Our Lady of Sacred Heart in a Section 1-AA softball game Monday afternoon.
The win leapfrogs the Blue Devils over OLSH for third place in the section standings.
Kozares made it to second base on an error before Abbott lashed a hit to right field.
Aubrey Krivak hurt OLSH with her bat and arm. She picked up the win, struck 14 and cracked a three-run homer in the second for Burgettstown (5-3, 6-7). Bri Krynak and Madeyson Monaghan each hit a double.
Madison Clystelk hit a two-run home run for OLSH (4-3, 4-5).
Ringgold 5, Belle Vernon 3: A four-run fourth inning propelled Ringgold to a 5-3 victory over Belle Vernon in a Class 4A Section 2 game.
Nya Adams and and Jolly Arbes each knocked in two runs for Ringgold (5-3, 5-4). Ashlee Selembo tripled.
Jordan French had three hits and two RBI for Belle Vernon (3-5, 5-9). Natalie French and Sophie Godzak each had two hits.
Mapletown 12, Monessen 5: It wasn’t the cleanest played game but Mapletown downed Monessen 12-5 in Section 2-A.
Each team committed nine errors.
Macee Cree shut out Monessen for the final four innings and struck out five for the Maples (4-1, 7-1). Mekenzie Reda tripled and drove in two runs. Hannah Dusenberry doubled.
Losing pitcher Hannah Yorty struck out 10 and hit a double. Madison Telegraphis also doubled.
McGuffey 3, Bentworth 2: Shelby Dobrzynski won a pitcher’s duel as McGuffey scored two runs in the fourth inning to edge Bentworth, 3-2, in a Class 2A Section 3 game.
The one-run win ends a five-game losing streak for the Highlanders, who were searching for their first victory since April 2. It also avenges a one-run loss to Bentworth (3-5, 6-8) four days ago.
Dobrzynski stuck out nine and surrendered just the two runs in seven innings for the victory.
Bearcats’ pitcher Leah Lindley went six strong innings, stuck out eight and gave up three runs (one earned). Lindley only surrendered five hits.
Savannah Adams hit a double and home run that led to her 3-for-3 day for Bentworth.
Katie Seabright had a pair of hits for McGuffey (2-5, 2-6).
Keystone Oaks 12, Waynesburg 5: It looked as if Waynesburg could give Keystone Oaks its first Class 3A Section 3 loss of the season.
Then the fifth and sixth innings happened.
The Golden Eagles exploded for five runs in the fifth and seven runs in the sixth to stay undefeated by defeating Waynesburg 12-5.
Keystone Oaks (7-0, 7-1) collected 20 hits. Eight different players had a multi-hit game, including a team-high four hits for Sophia Piatt.
Kylee Goodman went 3-for-4 and drove in a pair of runs for Waynesburg (2-4, 5-5).
Seton LaSalle 10, Washington 0: Casey Barton had 10 strikeouts as Seton LaSalle defeated Washington in five innings, 10-0, in a non-section game.
Caitlyn Guerriero and Barton each had two hits for the Rebels. Hadley Horensky went 3-for-4 with two RBI and a double to lead Seton LaSalle (5-5).
Baseball
Upper St. Clair 8, Canon-McMillan 3: Falling behind early and failing to catch up, Canon-McMillan fell to visiting Class 6A Section 3 foe Upper St. Clair, 8-3, to lose its third consecutive game.
Upper St. Clair (4-3, 8-5), which jumps the Big Macs for third place in the section standings with the victory, scored a pair of runs in the first two innings before doubling that lead to 8-0 in the third.
Ryan Ghise went 3-for-4 with an RBI single in the second inning.
Eli Shedd then shut down the defending state champions on the mound. Shedd limited Canon-McMillan (3-4, 7-6) to three hits and struck out six.
The Big Macs left the bases loaded in the fifth inning.
Cam Walker went 2-for-3 with an RBI for C-M.
Bentworth 12, Avella 2: Josh Young pitched all five innings and struck out six as Bentworth defeated Avella, 12-2, in a non-section game shortened by the mercy rule.
Bentworth (7-5) scored at least one run in all five innings, including jumping out to a 7-0 lead after the top of the third.
Aaron Bunner had three hits for the Bearcats. Isiah Russell Russell went 2-for-4 with a double and three RBI. Austyn Pistelli went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI.
Derek Darolli had an RBI single for Avella (3-6).
McGuffey 16, Washington 1: Chad Fleischauer had a pair of hits, two RBI and scored three runs as McGuffey capitalized on 10 errors from Washington to beat the Prexies in three innings, 16-1, in a Class 3A Section 3 game.
Highlanders’ pitcher Brayden Kay won the shortened start. Brock Wallace drove in three runs and Jake Order knocked in a pair for McGuffey (5-1, 6-3).
The lone run for Washington (0-5, 2-8) came in the second inning.
Chartiers-Houston 13, Burgettstown 0: Chartiers-Houston took advantage of eight walks and pounded nine hits in a 13-0 victory over Burgettstown in a Class 2A Section 1 game.
Winning pitcher Destin Weiser went 2-for-3 with a double and three RBI for the Bucs (6-0, 8-2). Josh Colletti went 3-for-3 with three runs and two RBI and Alex Siege and Jimmy Sadler combined to go 3-for-5 with six runs and two RBI. Weiser struck out eight.
Dante Gianfrancesco and Jake Brown had one hit each for Burgettstown (0-6, 2-8).
