High school baseball roundup: Paterni strikes out 11 in Fort Cherry win
Max Paterni struck out 11 in a complete-game performance, lifting Fort Cherry to a 7-3 victory over Burgettstown in a Class 2A Section 1 game Wednesday.
Paterni, a junior, scattered six hits and one walk as Fort Cherry improved to 4-3 in the section and 7-5 overall. The Rangers trailed 3-2 before scoring five times in the top of the fifth inning.
A bases-loaded walk tied the score at 3-3 and Blake McElheny, who had a double for Fort Cherry, scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch.
Luke Lounder smacked a double for Burgettstown (0-7, 2-9).
Monessen 13, Mapletown 3: Winning pitcher Jack Sacco struck out 10 and Monessen defeated visiting Mapletown 13-3 in a five-inning Section 2-A game.
Monessen (5-2, 6-6) was sparked by a seven-run bottom of the first inning. Zach Evans had a double for the Greyhounds, and Sacco, Sonny Thomas, Tyler Swann and Dishon Howell each drove in two runs.
Logan Beck had two singles for Mapletown (0-5, 0-8).
Brownsville 5, Bentworth 2: Brownsville took advantage of eight Bentworth errors in a 5-2 victory in a Section 1-AA game.
Nick Keeney singled in two runs for the Falcons (4-4, 8-4). Zach Kutek picked up the win.
Mike Vittone doubled and scored for Bentworth (3-4, 7-7). Losing pitcher Dustin Kisner struck out five.
