High school softball roundup: Monessen upsets Mapletown
Mattie Telegraphis had three hits as Monessen built an early lead and upset Mapletown, 6-5, in a Class A Section 2 softball game Monday afternoon.
Telegraphis had a double and the Greyhounds, who have won two straight, scored three runs in the first inning.
Mapletown (5-2, 8-2) scored four runs in the fifth and another in the seventh but couldn’t complete the comeback. Taylor Dusenberry homered and Hannah Hartley went 2-for-3 with a double for the Maples.
Monessen (3-5, 3-8) pitcher Hannah Yorty kept Mapletown down with 11 strikeouts for the win.
Waynesburg 5, Steel Valley 1: Meghan Braun threw a five-hitter and Waynesburg scored five runs in the fourth inning to beat Steel Valley 5-1 in a Class 3A Section 3 game.
The win keeps Waynesburg’s playoff hopes alive. The Raiders fell behind 1-0 in the top of the fourth inning but answered quickly with five runs in the bottom of the frame.
Braun walked only one batter and struck out five.
The Raiders had nine hits, all singles, including two each from Kylee Goodman, Bailee Shimek and Brooke Coss.
The loss drops Steel Valley to 2-8 in section and 3-12 overall.
South Fayette 16, Western Beaver 1: South Fayette had 13 hits, including five home runs, in only four innings as the Lions rolled to a 16-1 win over Western Beaver in Class 5A Section 3.
It was the seventh time in the last nine games that South Fayette (6-4, 9-6) scored at least 10 runs.
Winning pitcher Mara Iagnemma, who struck out eight, went 3-for-3 with four RBI and a home run. Lauren Bernett, Liv Goerdt, Madison Potteiger and Lexi Yates also homered. Goerdt, Iagnemma and Aliya Schrader each contributed a double.
Western Beaver is winless at 0-9, 0-12.
Ringgold 8, West Mifflin 5: Ringgold broke a tie by scoring four runs in the third inning and Hallie Resosky hit a game-clinching two-run homer in the sixth as the Rams held off West Mifflin 8-5 in Class 4A Section 2.
The win clinched a playoff berth for Ringgold (6-4, 6-5), which led 6-2 after three innings. West Mifflin (7-4, 12-4), which also is playoff bound, pulled to within 6-5 in the sixth before Resosky’s homer. Resosky finished the game with three RBI.
Nat Adams was 3-for-3 and scored three times for Ringgold. Jillian Scherer was the winning pitcher.
Bentworth 8, Brownsville 6: Bentworth used a five-run fourth inning to forge a big lead, then had to hold off a late charge by Brownsville to beat the Falcons 8-6 in a non-section game.
Winning pitcher Leah Lindley struck out 10 and belted a two-run homer in the third inning that gave the Bearcats (7-9) the lead for good. Bentworth stretched its advantage to 8-1 after the big fourth inning.
Brownsville (5-11) had only seven hits but played double or nothing as Savannah Urban, Emily Bohna, Payton hall, Claire Zelner and Chai Diggs each hits two-baggers.
Emilie Snyder doubled for Bentworth.
Canon-McMillan 9, Bethel Park 5: Grace Higgins, Olivia Ulam and Sydney Senay each had three hits as Canon-McMillan made Class 6A Section 1 more interesting by knocking off first-place Bethel Park, 9-5.
After surrendering four runs and the lead in the bottom of the third inning, the Big Macs answered with four runs of their own to take the lead for the remainder.
Lindsay Schmidt went 2-for-4 and drove in a pair of runs for Canon-McMillan (8-3, 9-4), which is a game and a half out behind the first-place Blackhawks. Baldwin is in second.
Bethel Park (10-2, 10-2) remains in first with two section games remaining.
It is the fourth consecutive win for C-M.
Charleroi 16, Beth-Center 6: Tying a single-game high for runs this season, Charleroi earned a much-needed 16-6 win over Beth-Center to remain in fourth place in Class 2A Section 3.
Bre Painter and Jocelyn Polonoli each went 4-for-5 for the Cougars, who scored four runs in the first and six in the third to build their lead. Painter had a double and a home run. Polonoli hit a double and a triple. Sarah Kondratik had three hits for Charleroi (4-6, 6-7).
Beth-Center falls to 0-10 in section and overall.
Peters Township 15, Allderdice 0: Peters Township scored 14 runs in the top of the first inning and blanked Allderdice 15-0 in Class 6A Section 1.
Kate Hondru went 3-for-3 with a double. Alex Bondi drove in three runs.
Frazier 16, McGuffey 0: Kathryn Barch had four hits, two doubles and five RBI to lead Frazier over McGuffe, 16-0, in a four-inning Class 3A Section 2 game.
Logan Hartman went 3-for-3, drove in four runs and scored four times for Frazier (10-2, 12-2), which has won three straight games by the mercy rule after losing to Carmichaels early last week.
Hartman also limited McGuffey (3-7, 3-8) to three hits. The Highlanders committed five errors.
