Cal hires coach

A former player and coach within the area, Anita Onufer was announced as the head tennis coach at California University of Pennsylvania on Wednesday afternoon.

Onufer spent the past two seasons on the coaching staff at fellow Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC)-member Seton Hill after being a three-sport student-athlete at Saint Vincent, a NCAA Division III program. She was a member of the tennis, swimming and lacrosse teams while with the Bearcats.

“We are proud to have Anita join our coaching staff, as she brings not only experience as a collegiate tennis player at Saint Vincent, but also coaching experience from Seton Hill,” said Cal U Athletic Director Dr. Karen Hjerpe. “Her knowledge of the PSAC and NCAA Division II are invaluable as we prepare for the upcoming season.”

Onufer has helped Seton Hill finish fourth in the PSAC West standings in each of the past two seasons after the program won only a combined five divisional matches in its initial four years in the league. The Griffins have missed qualifying for the PSAC Tournament by just one match in each of the last two seasons.

In college golf

After posting its league-best 19th Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) team title last spring, the Washington & Jefferson College men’s golf program was picked as the favorite in this year’s PAC preseason coaches’ poll, as voted on by the conference’s seven head coaches. The results of the poll were announced along with the PAC’s Players to Watch List Wednesday.

W&J, winners of 11 conference titles since 2000, made its eighth appearance in the NCAA Division III Championships last May. The Presidents tied for 30th in the 41-team field. W&J has earned the league’s automatic qualifying bid seven times since 2008.

Led by fifth-year head coach Matt Kluck, a two-time (2018, 2019) PAC Coach of the Year honoree, W&J collected five of seven first-place votes and 40 total points to earn the poll’s top spot.

LeBron donates court

LeBron James has dedicated a basketball court at the school he founded for underprivileged children in his hometown.

Joined by his close friends and former teammates from nearby St. Vincent-St. Mary High School, James helped unveil a multicolored outdoor court at the I Promise School, which has just started its second academic year and now serves more than 300 students from grades 3-5.

The NBA superstar is spending more than $1 million on various upgrades for the school. James and his high school buddies played a few of the kids in a quick game, and the four-time MVP dunked to break in one of the hoops.

The 34-year-old will soon begin his second season with the Los Angeles Lakers. He missed the playoffs last season, failing to make the Finals for the first time in nine years.

James has a starring role in “Space Jam 2,” which has been filming in Hollywood this summer.

Correction

Washington County was not six outs away from winning its first three Pony League World Series games for the first time in tournament history as written in Tuesday’s game story. Other Washington teams have accomplished the feat.
