Trinity 6th at tourney

Trinity had six placewinners, including a second-place finish by Ty Banco at 22 pounds in Saturday’s final of the Eastern Tournament at Gateway High School.

Banco dropped a 13-6 decision to Jack Dilts of Kiski in the finals.

Cole Witmer finished fourth at 195 pounds and Lane Witmer (106), Micah Finley (145), J.T. Porter (160), and Ty Brophy (Hvy) each finished fifth.

In the NHL

Mark Scheifele scored twice, the second on a power play with 4:22 left for his 400th NHL point, in the Winnipeg Jets’ 3-2 victory over the Anaheim Ducks on Sunday.

Scheifele beat goalie John Gibson over the glove for his 13th of the season.

  • Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 30 shots to win for the second straight night as Florida beat San Jose, 5-1.

Aleksander Barkov, Keith Yandle and Frank Vatrano each had a goal and an assist, and Mike Matheson and Brett Connolly also scored to help Florida win for the third time in four games. Aaron Ekblad and Jonathan Huberdeau each had two assists.

In the NBA

Tyler Herro scored 27 points, including a go-ahead 3-pointer with 38.2 seconds left in overtime, and the Miami Heat held off the Chicago Bulls 110-105 on Sunday night to improve to 10-0 at home this season.

  • Tobias Harris scored 26 points and rookie Matisse Thybulle had a career-high 20 points, including a pair of free throws with 23 seconds left, to lead Philadelphia past Toronto, 110-104, for its 12th straight home win.
  • Kawhi Leonard had 34 points and 11 rebounds and Los Angeles bounced back from its worst loss of the season with a 135-119 win over Washington.

In college basketball

Mamadi Diakite scored 12 points and No. 5 Virginia rebounded from a blowout loss to beat No. 7 North Carolina 56-47 on Sunday.

Tomas Woldetensae added 11 points and Francisco Caffaro had 10 and six rebounds for the Cavaliers (8-1, 2-0 Atlantic Coast Conference). They lost 69-40 at Purdue in the Big Ten-ACC Challenge on Wednesday night.

  • Killian Tillie made a 3-pointer as the shot clock expired with 2:55 remaining and finished with 15 points, Joel Ayayi hit another 3 with 24 seconds left and Gonzaga held off Washington, 83-76.
  • Cassius Winston had 23 points and seven assists, helping Michigan State pull away to beat Rutgers, 77-65, in the Big Ten opener for both teams.

The Spartans (6-3) led by just two points midway through the second half before outscoring the Scarlet Knights 16-7 to take control. Michigan State’s Gabe Brown scored a season-high 14 points, starting in place of Rocket Watts, who is expected to be out for about a week with a leg injury. Xavier Tillman had 14 points and 10 rebounds while Aaron Henry added 12 points on 2 of 10 shooting from the field and 7 of 8 at the line.

Pens send forward down

The Pittsburgh Penguins have re-assigned forward Joseph Blandisi to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins of the American Hockey League.

Blandisi, 25, played two games for Pittsburgh since being called up for the third time this season on Nov. 29. In those two contests, both against St. Louis, Blandisi tallied one assist.

In 11 games at the NHL level in 2019-20, Blandisi has recorded three points (1G-2A) including the game-winning goal on October 12 against the Minnesota Wild.

With WBS, the Markham, Ontario native has six points (3G-3A) in 10 games.

On Tuesday, December 10, Pittsburgh begins a three-game homestand against the Montreal Canadiens at 7 p.m.
