CM perfect against Carrick
PITTSBURGH – Canon-McMillan High School’s wrestling team put on a perfect performance in the preliminary round of the PIAA Class AAA Team Tournament.
The Big Macs won all 14 bouts in a 77-0 drubbing of City League champion Carrick Monday night.
The win advance the Big Macs to the Giant Center in Hershey for the first round of this event. Canon-McMillan will wrestle District 3 champion Cedar Cliff at 8 p.m.
Canon-McMillan was the third-place finisher in the WPIAL to earn the state berth.
“I was happy with their intensity out there,” said Canon-McMillan head coach Jeff Havelka. “They were all focused on this match. Everyone wrestled well.”
Gerrit Nijenhuis got some rest for his knee and was replaced by Tyler Kerr at 182 pounds. Jacob Gardner suffered a broken ankle against Kiski in the WPIAL semifinal and was replaced by Danny Phillips at 138 pounds. Both responded by getting pins.
“They were ready to go,” said Havelka. “They were ready to go.”
Other pins for the Big Macs came from Jacob Houpt at 106 pounds, Jimmy Baxter at 120, Ken Hayman at 126, Tanner Rohaley at 145, John Shanahan at 160, Tyler Rohaley at 170, Evan Miller at 195, Alec Hendal at 220 and Gio Ramos at heavyweight.
