High school basketball roundup: DeRubbo returns in Trinity win; Wash High rallies for victory

There was plenty of good news for the Trinity girls basketball team Monday night.

First, the Hillers rolled to a 60-24 victory over host Lincoln Park in a Class 5A Section 1 game, locking up a postseason berth for the Hillers out of Class 5A Section 1.

Second, Trinity raced to a 17-point lead after one quarter and had three players finish the game by scoring in double figures.

Third, the Hillers’ Riley DeRubbo made her season debut after missing the first 18 games because of a knee surgery suffered during the summer. DeRubbo played about 10 minutes and scored four points.

DeRubbo didn’t have as much impact on the game as Trinity’s Kaylin Venick, who scored a game-high 17 points as the Hillers improved to 8-5 in the section and 10-9 overall. Ashley Durig and Alyssa Clutter were close behind as each scored 15 points.

Riley Arrigo had 11 points for Lincoln Park (1-11, 5-13).

Washington 62, Seton-La Salle 47: Carley Allen scored a game-high 25 points and led a fourth-quarter surge by Washington that netted the Prexies a 62-47 road victory over Seton-La Salle and kept the Prexies’ hopes alive for a share of the Class 3A Section 2 title.

Washington (11-2, 16-4), which has won four in a row, led 31-25 at halftime before Seton-La Salle had a 16-8 scoring edge in the third quarter and took a 41-39 lead into the final eight minutes. That’s when the Prexies took control, outscoring the Rebels 23-6.

Randi Thomas had 10 points and 10 steals to support Allen’s scoring.

Vanessa Hudson had 21 points for Seton-La Salle (9-3, 10-8).

Peters Township 68, Mt. Lebanon 40: Isabella Mills and Journey Thompson each had a double-double to help Peters Township rout Mt. Lebanon, 68-40, in a Section 2 game in Class 6A.

The win stretches the Indians’ winning streak to 20 straight games since the start of the season.

Mills had 15 points and 10 rebounds for PT, now 13-0 in the section. Thompson had 15 points and 10 rebounds. Makenna Marisa scored a game-high 19 points.

Bridget Bruni scored 8 points for Mt. Lebanon (9-4, 10-10), which trailed 37-20 at halftime.

Bishop Canevin 68, Fort Cherry 13: Gillian Gustine scored 19 points to lead Bishop Canevin over Fort Cherry, 68-13, in a Section 3-AA game.

Emma Theodorrson added 14 points for Bishop Canevin (11-0, 18-2).

Jill Panizza had four points for Fort Cherry (5-6, 7-11).

Burgettstown 37, Chartiers-Houston 23: A 13-3 run in the second quarter provided the cushion for Burgettstown to take a 37-23 victory over Chartiers-Houston in Section 3-AA

The win ties Burgettstown with C-H at 5-5 in the section.

Geena DeMario scored 14 points and Emily Prasko tossed in 10 points for Burgettstown (9-10), which led 21-7 at halftime. The Bucs (7-12) were led by Dominique Mortimer’s 11 points.

Belle Vernon 46, Southmoreland 44, OT: Belle Vernon used a 7-0 run in overtime and a 23-point performance by Lindsay Steeber to knock off Southmoreland, 46-44, in a Class 4A Section 3 game between playoff-bound teams.

Belle Vernon (9-4, 13-8) led 21-12 at halftime and 29-21 after three quarters but had to hold off a Southmoreland comeback as the game went to overtime tied at 37-37.

Bailey Kuhns had 16 points and Maggie Moore had 15 for Southmoreland (10-3, 16-4), which has lost two in a row.

McGuffey 47, Waynesburg 44: Abby Donnelly and Keira Nicolella combined for 28 points and McGuffey made 19 free throws in the second half to pull out a 47-44 home-court victory over Waynesburg in Class 3A Section 2.

McGuffey (5-7, 8-11), which has won three of its last four, scored only 10 first-half points, but Donnelly and Nicolella each made a pair of three-pointers in the second half to get the Highlanders’ offense going. McGuffey then took advantage of being in the double bonus early in the second half and made 19 of 28 free throws after halftime. The Highlanders were 21 of 33 for the game.

Donnelly led the Highlanders with 15 points and Nicolella had 13.

McGuffey had to withstand a sterling 22-point performance by Waynesburg’s Clara Paige Miller. Jules Fowler also was in double figures with 16 points. The Raiders are 1-12 in section and 6-15 overall.

Monessen 59, Jefferson-Morgan 33: Monessen set itself up for an opportunity to make the Class A playoffs in a 59-33 victory at Jefferson-Morgan in Section 2.

The Greyhounds (5-6, 6-13) host Mapletown (5-5, 10-8) today at 5:30 p.m. The winner qualifies for the postseason and the loser is out.

Monessen held a 9-4 lead after the first quarter, and after outscoring the Rockets, 20-4, in the second, the visitors had a 29-8 halftime advantage. Monessen’s Kendelle Weston was the game’s leading scorer with 22 points. She scored eight in the pivotal second quarter. Zykavia Hairston had 13.

Autumn Gustovich and Brynn Boyd each scored 12 points for Jefferson-Morgan (2-9, 5-14).

Avella 47, Mapletown 41: Colleen Kinney scored a game-high 18 points and Avella, sparked by a big third quarter, slipped past host Mapletown 47-41 in a Section 2-A game.

Mapletown (5-6, 10-7), which would have greatly enhanced its playoff chances with a victory, led 20-18 at halftime but Avella outscored the hosts 16-5 in the pivotal third quarter.

Brianna Jenkins had 11 points for playoff-bound Avella (9-2, 15-4).

Abby Antill’s 15 points paced Mapletown (5-6, 10-9), which can clinch a playoff berth today with a win at Monessen. Taylor Dusenberry also was in double figures with 11 points.

Bethel Park 63, Canon-McMillan 41: Bethel Park had four players in double figures, led by Maddie Dziezgowski’s game-high 24 points, as the Black Hawks pulled away over the middle two quarters to defeat visiting Canon-McMillan 63-41 in Class 6A Section 2.

After the first quarter ended tied 14-14, Bethel Park outscored C-M 36-16 over the next 16 minutes. The Black Hawks improved to 10-2 in the section and 17-2 overall.

Tamara Mathis scored 11 points to pace the Big Macs (5-8, 8-11). Nayah Williams followed with 10 points.

West Greene 63, Geibel Catholic 6: West Greene bounced back from a rare loss Saturday in a nonsection game at powerful Bishop Canevin by steamrolling overmatched Geibel Catholic 63-6 in Section 2-A.

McKenna Lampe led West Greene (11-0, 19-2) with 15 points, and Kaitlyn Rizor and Madison Lampe each contributed 11 but the Pioneers didn’t need much scoring. West Greene led 28-2 after the first quarter and Geibel (0-12, 1-18) didn’t score again until the fourth quarter, when they had four points.

Brownsville 50, Charleroi 33: Alexis Carson scored 15 points and Brownsville defeated visiting Charleroi 50-33 in a Class 3A Section 2 game.

Brownsville (4-8, 10-9) moved above the .500 mark overall by playing a strong first half, building leads of 9-4 after one quarter and 25-14 at halftime.

Belle Skobel was the leading scorer for Charleroi (1-11, 4-15) with 13 points.

Boys results

Washington 43, Southmoreland 35: Washington broke open a tie game with a 15-7 run in the fourth quarter in a 43-35 victory over Southmoreland in a Section 2 game in Class 3A.

Ian Bredniak led the Prexies (9-1, 11-7) with 11 points.

Riley Conforti’s 13 points paced Southmoreland (6-4, 11-8).

West Greene 67, Mapletown 38: Senior point guard Joey Reed scored a career-high 17 points and made five of West Greene’s 10 three-point field goals as the Pioneers defeated Mapletown 67-38 in Section 2-A.

The long-range shooting by West Greene (4-6, 6-11) moved the Pioneers into a tie with Avella for the final playoff berth in the section. Both the Pioneers and the eagles have two section games remaining.

Nathan Brudnock continued his steady play for West Greene by scoring 15 points, Gavin Scott had 14, which included four three-pointers, and Ben Jackson scored 12.

Mapletown (1-10, 1-19) had two two players in double figures as both Ryan Tuttle and Matt Atwood scored 10 points.

In other games: Seton-La Salle was a 65-32 winner over Fort Cherry in a Class 3A Section 2 boys game.
