Cal women slip to 17th

The California University women’s basketball team fell seven positions to No. 17 in the latest Women’s Basketball Coaches Association Top 25 poll on Tuesday afternoon.

The Vulcans (18-2) split a pair of games last week in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference West play. Cal cruised to a 91-62 win over Clarion on Wednesday after scoring over 40 points off turnovers. The Vulcans then dropped a 72-61 contest on Saturday at Slippery Rock after being held to their lowest field-goal percentage of the season.

Cal U remains one of two teams from the PSAC West Division and continues to be one of three teams from the Atlantic Region featured in the rankings. IUP (18-1) jumped one spot to No. 4 following a pair of double-digit victories last week, while Virginia Union (19-1) climbed three positions to No. 9 after extending its winning streak to 12 games. Additionally, Charleston (W.Va.) (17-3) and Glenville State (18-2) are the top schools among ‘others receiving votes.’

The top-five in the national poll featured another upset last week, as former No. 3 Ashland suffered its first home loss in 50 games when it dropped a two-point contest to nationally-ranked Grand Valley State. Drury (Mo.) (21-0) was the consensus No. 1 team in the country after receiving all 24 first-place votes, while UC San Diego (18-0) remained at No. 2 in the poll. Jefferson (Pa.) (20-0), IUP and Fort Hays State (Kan.) (19-1) all jumped one slot to round out the top five in the rankings.

The Vulcans are idle until they host Edinboro on Saturday, Feb. 9, at 1 p.m.

Vince Young arrested on DUI

Former Tennessee Titans quarterback Vince Young is free on bond after he was arrested on a drunken driving charge.

In a statement, the Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office says the former Texas Longhorns star was arrested about 4:30 a.m. Monday in the Missouri City area of suburban Houston. The six-year NFL veteran, who lists a Missouri City address as his residence, was charged with misdemeanor driving while intoxicated and released after posting a $500 cash bond.

Sheriff’s spokesman Bob Hanel told the Houston Chronicle that “the deputy noticed slurred speech and a strong smell of alcoholic beverage.” He also said Young “flunked every sobriety test they gave to him.”

Young served 18 months’ probation after pleading no contest in January 2017 to driving drunk in Austin.
