High school basketball roundup: West Greene boys secure 4th-straight playoff berth
Ben Jackson had a double-double and West Greene’s boys basketball team wrapped up the fourth and final playoff spot from Section 2-A with a 67-45 victory over Jefferson-Morgan on Friday night.
West Greene has qualified for the playoffs for four straight seasons, a program record.
Jackson scored 21 points and pulled down 12 rebounds for the Pioneers (5-7, 7-12), who led 35-20 at halftime. Ben Brudnock scored 20 points.
Tahj Jacobs scored a game-high 22 points for Jefferson-Morgan, which fell to 4-8 in the section and was eliminated from the playoffs.
Canon-McMillan 59, Ringgold 47: Canon-McMillan erupted for 41 first-half points and went on to 59-47 victory over Ringgold in a non-section game.
Tom Somosky scored 17 points and Luke Palma added 12 points for Canon-McMillan (13-8), which led 41-15 at halftime.
Ringgold (13-7) was paced by Jayden Taylor’s 15 points, Chris Peccon’s 13 points.
South Fayette 49, Trinity 44: South Fayette made 9 of 10 free throws in the fourth quarter to secure a 49-44 victory from Trinity in a Section 2 game in Class 5A.
The two teams entered the fourth quarter tied, 32-32, and the Lions 5-9, 9-11) outscored the Hillers (4-10, 7-14) by a 17-12 margin. For the game, South Fayette made 13 of 16 free throws. Trinity went 6-for-6.
Drew Franklin tossed in 12 points and Braden Hoy contributed 10 points for South Fayette.
Trinity, which lost its eighth straight game, was paced by Dylan King, who scored 16 points. Michael Koroly chipped in with 15 points.
Monessen 82, Mapletown 23: Four players scored in double figures as Monessen defeated Mapletown, 82-23, in a Section 2-A game.
Darnell Howell led the way with 17 points for the Greyhounds (12-0, 14-7). Devin Whitlock added 15 points, Elijahwa Payne scored 12 points and Marquel Smith contributed 10.
Lance Stevenson’s eight points keyed the Maples (1-14, 1-21).
Peters Township 76, Connellsville 52: Petres Township junior Colin Cote had one of those games when the basket seemed as big as the gym and the everything was going through the hoop.
Cote scored a game-high 30 points – 27 in the first half – and made eight three-point field goals as the Indians rolled to a 76-52 thumping of visiting Connellsville in a nonsection game, the Indians’ final home contest of the season.
Peters Township (13-7), which has qualified for the WPIAL Class 6A playoffs, scored 28 first-quarter points and led 52-21 at halftime.
Dax Plasinka, with 12 points, was the only other PT players to score in double figures. He finished with 12 points.
Jalen Rogers had 25 points for Connellsville (7-14).
Fort Cherry 66, Carlynton 57: Thomas Hamilton scored 21 points, Noah Babirad had a double-double and Fort Cherry defeated visiting Carlynton 66-57 in a Class 3A Section 2 contest.
Fort Cherry (2-10, 5-16) forged a 17-6 lead after one quarter and took a 26-17 edge into halftime. The Rangers opened the gap to 45-27 after three quarters, which enabled FC to overcome a 30-point fourth quarter by Carlynton (1-11, 5-16).
Maddox Truschel followed Hamilton in the scoring column with 18 points for Fort Cherry. Babirad had 14 points and a game-high 18 rebounds.
Chauncie Mickens scored 27 points to lead Carlynton and Mark Phillips had 14.
South Side Beaver 60, Burgettstown 49: Playoff-bound South Side Beaver opened a 12-point halftime lead, saw Burgettstown cut the gap to two points early in the fourth quarter and pulled away down the stretch for a 60-49 victory in Class 2A Section 3.
SSB (8-4, 16-6) led 30-18 at halftime and 37-29 after three quarters. Burgettstown (3-9, 9-13) closed to within 38-36 but was unable to pull even as the Rams held a 22-20 scoring edge int he fourth quarter.
Logan English led SSB with 18 points, Jake McDougal had 17 and Trevor Roach 12.
Scott Ferris had 16 points to pace Burgettstown and Dylan Poirier tossed in 14.
California 77, Bentworth 64: California, which is headed to the Class 2A playoffs, put four players in double figures and won its Section 2 finale, 77-64, over host Bentworth.
Malik Ramsey led the scoring column for California (7-5, 12-8) with 17 points. Nate Zemany followed with 14 points, and Nathan O’Savage and Cochise Ryan each contributed 12.
Bentworth (0-12, 0-21) had three players score in double figures led by Shawn Dziak, who had a game-high 20 points that included five three-pointers. Cameron Bell was right behind Dziak with 19 points and Jacob Burke had 13. The Bearcats scored 42 points in the second half.
Bishop Canevin 67, Avella 46: Aiden Logan scored a game-high 19 points to lead Bishop Canevin to a 67-46 victory over Avella in a Section 2-A game.
Davie Montgomery reached double figures with 18 points and Neven Crossey contributed 11 points for Bishop Canevin (10-2, 14-7).
Tyler Cerciello scored 13 points for Avella (4-8, 6-16), which lost its fourth game in a row.
Brownsville 80, Beth-Center 54: Nick Seto and Hunter Assad combined for 53 points to spark Brownsville to an 80-54 victory over visiting Beth-Center in Class 3A Section 4.
Seto scored 30 points, including 13 field goals, while Assad finished with 23 points with five three-pointers in the first half and 6-of-6 from the foul line. Assad scored 17 points in the first half.
Both point totals were career highs.
Phil Pace was also in double figures for the Falcons (1-11, 5-15) with 15 points.
JJ Green scored a game-high 32 points for the Bulldogs (2-10, 8-13) after topping 1,000 career points Thursday night.
Girls results
Mapletown 55, Hundred (W.Va.) 20: Taylor Dusenberry scored a career-high 26 points as part of a double-double and playoff-bound Mapletown rolled over visiting Hundred (W.Va.), 55-20.
Dusenberry, who outscored the entire Hundred team, also had 13 rebounds as Mapletown improved to 12-9 overall with one game remaining in the regular season.
The Maples led 13-7 after one quarter, then broke the game open by outscoring the Hornets 32-6 over the next two quarters.
Rachel Sneddar scored 10 points to lead Hundred (6-17).
Bishop Canevin 71, Chartiers-Houston 19: Section 3-AA champion Bishop Canevin put four players in double figures and cruised to a 71-19 home-court victory over Chartiers-Houston.
The powerful Crusaders (12-0, 19-2) blanked Chartiers-Houston in the first quarter and led 49-8 at halftime. Shamyjha Price, Gillan Gustine and Diajha Allen each scored 14 points for Bishop Canevin, the defending state champion that has not lost to an opponent from Pennsylvania since the season opener. Emma Theodorsson had 12 points.
Zamierah Edwards and Dominique Mortimer each scored seven points for Chartiers-Houston (6-6, 8-13), which has clinched a WPIAL playoff berth.
Carmichaels 40, Bentworth 28: Kylie Sinn scored 16 points and Carmichaels won its season finale, 40-28, over visiting Bentworth in a Class 2A Section 3 contest.
Gina Ranieri also hit double figures with 10 points for Carmichaels (2-10, 6-16), which led 24-20 at halftime before taking control of the game by outscoring the Bearcats 11-2 in the pivotal third quarter.
Jocelyn Timlin was the leading scorer for Bentworth (0-12, 1-20) with nine points.
