College basketball roundup: Edinboro hands Cal women third loss

Edinoro rallied from a 19-point deficit in the first half and won a heart-stopping 62-61 victory over 17th-ranked California in a PSAC West game. The loss snapped a 44-game winning streak at the Convocation Center.

Cal fell to 18-3 overall and 12-3 in the conference. The Vulcans suffered their first home loss at the Convocation Center since Jan. 9, 2016 and have lost back-to-back games in PSAC West play for the first time since the 2013-14 campaign. The Fighting Scots improve to 15-6 this season with a 10-5 record in conference action.

Edinboro seized control of the game with a 12-0 run to take a 62-59 lead with 2:44 left to play. Seairra Barrett snapped a nearly seven-minute scoreless drought for the Vulcans with a layup with 33 seconds remaining to cut the deficit to 62-61. The Vulcans were able to force a turnover on the next possession by the Fighting Scots and held the ball for the last shot, which missed.

Junior Michaela Barnes scored a game-high 27 points for Edinboro.

Senior Abbey Sporio led the Vulcans with 14 points and added seven rebounds, two assists and five steals while playing all 40 minutes. She has scored in double-digits seven times this season. Barrett collected a game-high 12 rebounds and added four assists and three steals, but was limited to a season-low eight points – 15 points below her season average. Junior Gina Vallecorsa scored 10 points.

Wash & Jeff 75, Kenyon 51: Four players finished in double figures to lead the Washington & Jefferson women’s basketball team to a decisive 75-51 non-conference victory over Kenyon College at the Henry Memorial Center.

Both teams entered the game with identical 15-7 records.

Danielle Parker paced the Presidents with 16 points and eight rebounds, while Aleena McDaniel matched her season high with 14 points. Allie Seto filled the stat sheet with 11 points, eight rebounds, five blocks and four steals. Maria Lawhorne scored 10 points.

Saint Vincent 80, Waynesburg 57: Madison Kollar scored 24 points to lead Saint Vincent to an 80-57 victory over Waynesburg in a Presidents’ Athletic Conference game.

Maria Morgan scored 14 points and Taylor Boring 10 for Saint Vincent (13-1, 19-4).

Andrea Orlosky paced Waynesburg (5-8, 7-16) with 15 points. Erin Joyce had 11 and Haley Porter 10.

Men’s results

Edinboro 79, California 75: Edinboro made five of seven attempts from the free-throw line in the last minute to seal a 79-75 victory over California in a PSAC West game.

The Vulcans dropped to 7-14 overall and 5-10 in the conference. Cal remains in sixth place in the divisional standings and in possession of the final PSAC Tournament spot with six games left.

The Fighting Scots improve to 7-13 overall with a 4-11 mark in conference action.

Junior Steven Freeman finished with 18 points for Edinboro. Freshman Turner Kurt dropped in 17 points, had five rebounds and four assists in 39 minutes, and senior Trey Staunch posted a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds while playing 37 minutes. Sophomore Jaryn Simpson totaled 13 points, three rebounds and three assists in 25 minutes after battling foul trouble.

Cal freshman Collin MacAdams led all scorers with 22 points and added nine rebounds and three steals in 40 minutes. He has four 20-point games this season and ranks third on the team in scoring with 14.5 points per game. Sophomore Brent Pegram finished with 20 points. He has record nine 20-point games this season. Freshman Zyan Collins scored 18 points and sophomore Ike Okwara had a season-high 11 rebounds.

Cal held a 68-64 advantage in the final minutes before Edinboro registered 10-straight points to take a 74-68 lead. Collins trimmed the deficit to 74-71 after knocking down a three-pointer with 54 seconds remaining but Edinboro hit its free throws for the win.

Saint Vincent 88, Waynesburg 60: Four players finished in double figures to lead Saint Vincent to an 88-60 rout of Waynesburg in a Presidents’ Athletic Conference game.

David Stephen led the way with 17 points and Michael Simmons scored 13 for SV (12-2, 19-4). Tom Kromka chipped in with 12 and Shemar Bennet had 10.

Waynesburg (6-8, 7-16) was led by Matt Popeck and Brennan Smith, who each scored 9 points.
