High school basketball roundup: Peters Township knocks off North Catholic

For the second straight game, Colin Cote sank eight three-point field goals, this time leading Peters Township to a 62-55 victory over North Catholic in a non-section boys basketball game Saturday afternoon.

Cote scored a game-high 28 points for the Indians, who led 30-26 at halftime. Dax Ploskina contributed 13 points and Julian Mascio added 10 points for Peters Township (14-7).

North Catholic (18-3) was led by Isaac DeGregorio, who scored 26 points. Jackson Paschall added 10 points.

Propel Andrew Street 51, West Greene 36: Shane Walker scored 14 points to lead Propel Andrew Street to a 51-36 victory over West Greene in a non-section game.

Marcell Wallace scored 13 points for Propel Andrew Street, which outscored the Pioneers34-19 in the second half.

West Greene (7-13) was sparked by Nathan Brudnock’s 12 points.

South Fayette 73, Brownsville 60: A quick start and three players finishing with double-digit point totals lifted South Fayette to a 73-60 victory over Brownsville in a non-section game.

It was the most points the Lions scored in a game since the season opener when they finished with 74 points in a win over Frazier.

Doubling Brownsville in the first quarter, 22-11, South Fayette (10-11) took a 45-27 lead into halftime.

Drew Franklin led the Lions, who won their last three games, with 16 points. Kade St. Ledger scored 12 and Joey Alcorn added 11.

Brownsville (5-16) had the two highest scorers in the game. Phil Pace and Nick Seto accounted for 51 of the 60 points from the Falcons. Pace finished with a game-high 30 and Seto scored 21.

Seton-La Salle 79, Monessen 59: Seton-La Salle scored 23 points in both the first and second quarters to put a screeching halt to Monessen’s four-game winning streak, defeating the Greyhounds 79-59 in a non-section game.

Michael Bigley led the effort for the Class 3A Rebels, tying Monessen’s Devin Whitlock with a game-high 27 points. Jake Verner added 13 points for Seton-La Salle (17-3).

Elijahwa Payne scored 10 points for the Greyhounds.

Seven of the eight games Monessen (14-8) has lost this season were against teams in higher classifications or in the City League.

Girls results

Burgettstown 43, California 26: Three players scored in double figures during Burgettstown’s 43-26 victory over California in a non-section game.

Emily Prasko led the way with 16 points, Geene DeMario poured in 11 points and Avery Havelka contributed 10 points for Burgettstown (12-10), which led 27-16 at halftime.

California (10-9) was keyed by Makayla Boda’s 13 points.

California 47, Jefferson-Morgan 33: Sydney Smichnick and Makayla Boda scored in double figures as California needed two days to defeat Jefferson-Morgan, 47-33, in a Class A Section 2 game.

The game, which was originally started Thursday night, was suspended because a leak in the roof with 4:23 left in the third quarter and California holding a 30-25 lead Thursday night.

The five-point lead for California was extended in the fourth quarter when it outscored the Rockets 9-2.

Smichnick led all scorers with 13 points, while Boda finished with 12 for the Trojans.

Jefferson-Morgan (2-10, 5-15) was led by the scoring of Autumn Gustovich, who scored 12 points, and Brynn Boyd’s 11 points.

Canon-McMillan 48, Carlynton 38: Tamara Mathis scored 18 points to help Canon-McMillan down Carlynton, 48-38, in the Pittsburgh Classic Ambridge Tournament.

The Big Macs (9-12) outscored the Cougars, 20-8, in the fourth quarter. Naya Williams had 10 rebounds for C-M.

Anjelica Diallo scored 10 points for Carlynton (18-3), which led 30-28 after three quarters.

Monessen 52, New Brighton 34: Zykavia Hairston score a game-high 16 points to lead Monessen to a 52-34 victory over New Brighton in the Pittsburgh Classic at Ambridge High School.

The Greyhounds built the lead in their season finale by outscoring New Brighton (2-18) in the first and second quarter to lead 24-7 at halftime.

Bianca Anderson paced the Lions with 12 points.

The seven victories for Monessen (7-14) was the most since 2014-15.
