Small college basketball roundup: Weiss shines but W&J downs Bethany
Former McGuffey standout Sammie Weiss led all scorers with 25 points but was unable to lead Bethany past visiting Washington & Jefferson, which shrugged off a sluggish start Wednesday night, to win the Presidents’ Athletic Conference women’s basketball game 66-56.
Washington & Jefferson (12-3, 17-7) was led by a balanced effort from Canon-McMillan graduate Danielle Parker and Allie Seto. Each scored 18 points as the Presidents quickly erased a six-point deficit it faced after the first quarter.
Bethany (7-8, 12-12) quickly saw its 19-13 lead erased when it was outscored 21-8 in the second quarter to trail 34-27 at halftime.
Maria Lawhorne also scored 11 points for the Presidents. W&J also got a spark from its bench, outscoring the Bison who came off the bench, 25-0.
Waynesburg 80, Thiel 72: Five different players, including two off the bench, scored in double figures as Waynesburg defeated PAC foe Thiel on Senior Night, 80-72.
Haley Porter and Andrea Orlosky both scored 17 points for the Yellow Jackets, who improve to 5-9 in the PAC and 7-16 overall. Brooke Fuller finished with 16 points, while Monica Starre scored 12 and Kacey Kastroll added 10.
Leading nearly the entire game, Waynesburg held a decisive edge on the glass, outrebounding Thiel 52-22.
Thiel’s Jess Vormelker went 11-for-20 from the field to lead all scorers with 31 points. The Tomcats fall to 4-10 in the conference and 7-16 overall.
California 79, Gannon 45: California didn’t allow another significant lead in the first quarter slip through its fingers as the Vulcans trounced visiting Gannon, 79-45, in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference West Division game.
Cal blew a 25-6 first-quarter lead Saturday in a 62-61 loss to Edinboro.
Taking a 26-5 lead after the first quarter Wednesday, Cal (13-3, 19-3) continued to roll with another 21 points in the second to lead 47-16 at halftime. The Vulcans scored 16 points in both the third and fourth quarters to keep their distance from Gannon (7-10, 11-14).
Seiarra Barrett bounced back with a double-double, scoring 33 points and grabbing 14 rebounds. Abbey Sporio was the only other player to score in double figures for Cal with 14 points.
Nicole LaCava led the Knights with 11 points. Tori Obenrader scored eight points and had 11 rebounds for Gannon.
Men’s results
Waynesburg 75, Thiel 72: Not wasting opportunities at the foul line, Waynesburg converted on clutch free throws down the stretch to defeat Thiel, 75-72, in a PAC game.
Trailing 72-71 with 47 seconds remaining in regulation, Nate Gearhart made a pair of free throws to give the Yellow Jackets a one-point lead. Frank Bozicevic then extended that lead by making both of his foul shots with seven seconds left as Waynesburg (6-8, 7-16) hung on for the victory.
Matt Popeck led the Yellow Jackets with 18 points. Brennan Smith and Gearhart each scored 15, while Jake Dougherty made a trio of three-pointers that contributed to his 13 points.
Thiel (7-16, 5-9) was led by Terrance Holloway’s 23 points.
Gannon 70, California 69, OT: DeAnte Cisero made a pair of free throws with one second remaining in overtime as Gannon handed California a 70-69 gut-wrenching loss in PSAC West Division play.
The Vulcans took the one-point lead when Zyan Collins, who scored six their seven points in overtime, made a jumper with 10 seconds remaining. Collins also sent the game into overtime when he made another field goal with 34 seconds left in regulation to tie the score at 62-62. He led Cal (5-11, 7-15) with 19 points.
Cisero was the catalyst for Gannon (7-10, 9-15), scoring a game-high 22 points. Kevin Dodds scored 16 points and Joe Fustine had a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds for the Knights.
California also had a balanced offensive attack behind secondary scoring from Donte’ Williams’ 18 points. Collin MacAdams scored 15 and Brent Pegram chipped in 13. The Vulcans only shot 18 percent (5-for-28) from three-point range and 47 percent from the foul line (8-for-17).
Wash & Jeff 68, Bethany 60: Washington & Jefferson held off a second-half rally to defeat Bethany, 68-60, in a PAC game.
The win gives the Presidents, who improve to 8-7 in the PAC and 10-14 overall, its most league wins since the 2013-14 season.
Freshman Primo Zini led W&J with 17 points and nine rebounds. Jonathan DeVito scored 13 points. Nicholas Campalong and Cameron Seemann each finished with 10.
Bethany falls to 3-12 in conference play and 4-20 overall.
