Small college basketball roundup: Cal men not substituting but continue winning
Collin MacAdams scored 21 points, Brent Pegram and Zyan Collins each had 19 and California University held off host Lock Haven 78-74 in a PSAC game Saturday afternoon.
California (4-4, 6-8), which played only six players, won for the third time in its last four games. The Vulcans led 50-39 at halftime and by as many as 14 points in the second half before Lock Haven (4-5, 5-7) mounted a comeback.
The Bald Eagles closed to within 77-74 with 33 seconds left. After a missed free throw by Cal, Lock Haven had a chance to tie but misfired on a three-pointer.
The victory wasn’t secured until Cal’s Donte’ Williams made a free throw with three seconds remaining. Williams finished with 12 points.
The Vulcans shot 50 percent.
Lack Haven’s Jesse McPherson scored 22 points.
Wash & Jeff 75, Bethany 61: Zach Queen scored 18 points and Primo Zini came off the bench to toss in 15 as Washington & Jefferson got back on the winning track with a 75-61 victory over visiting Bethany in the Presidents Athletic Conference.
W&J (5-2, 7-9) remains in second place in the conference. Bethany (0-7, 1-15) has lost 12 in a row.
The Presidents led by only 31-29 at halftime but scored the first 12 points of the second half and Bethany never recovered.
Khalil Wilson was the leading scorer for Bethany with 12 points.
Thiel 80, Waynesburg 74: All five Thiel starters scored in double figures and the Tomcats held off visiting Waynesburg 80-74 in a PAC game.
Terrance Holloway led Thiel (3-4, 5-11) with 22 points, Daquan Simmons had 15, and Alonzo Brown, Nyric Gosley and Ahmad Tejumola each had 12 points.
Waynesburg’s Brennan Smith and Matt Popeck did their best to keep Waynesburg within striking distance. Smith scored a game-high 24 points on 12-for-16 shooting. Popeck had 22 points and four assists. Jake Dougherty contributed 10 points.
The Yellow Jackets (3-4, 4-11) shot 55 percent but couldn’t overcome 21 turnovers.
Thiel shot 50 percent but committed only 12 turnovers. The Tomcats led by 14 points early in the second half before Waynesburg closed to within 77-74 with 21 seconds remaining but the Yellow Jackets could get no closer.
Women’s results
California 65, Lock Haven 49: Seairra Barrett scored 24 points and 16th-ranked California pulled away in the second half for a 65-49 victory at Lock Haven in a PSAC game.
California (7-1, 13-1) led by only 32-27 at halftime but outscored the Bald Eagles 16-9 in the third quarter. Barrett scored 16 of her points in the second half.
Jiahna Flood-Francis was the only other Cal player to score ind double figures. She finished with 11 points, nine coming in the second half.
Rileigh Devine led Lock Haven (4-5, 8-7) with 12 points. The Bald Eagles shot only 28 percent in the second half.
Wash & Jeff 71, Bethany 49: Alie Seto had 20 points, 11 rebounds and three steals in only 26 minutes of playing time as host Washington & Jefferson rolled to a 71-49 victory over Bethany in the PAC.
W&J (6-1, 10-5) is in second place in the PAC and kept the pressure of first-place Saint Vincent. The Presidents forced 21 turnovers by Bethany (4-3, 9-7) and held the Bison to 31 percent shooting.
Seto made seven of 12 shots from the field and all three of her attempts from three-point range. Lauren Gilbert, with 10 points, was the only other W&J player to score in double figures. The Presidents had 12 different players in the scoring column.
Amanda Reynolds scored 17 points for Bethany.
Thiel 68, Waynesburg 59: Destiny Johnson scored 22 points, Jess Vormelker had 17 and Thiel snapped a 21-game losing streak in PAC play by defeating visiting Waynesburg 68-59.
Thiel (1-6, 3-12) led 19-14 after one quarter and was still leading, 52-49, entering the pivotal fourth quarter, then held Waynesburg to only 10 points.
The Yellow Jackets (1-6, 3-12), who have lost six in a row, shot only 28 percent from the field.
Monica Starre and Haley Porter each scored 14 points for Waynesburg and Brooke Fuller had 10.
