High school basketball roundup: Mathis drives Canon-Mac over Baldwin
Tamara Mathis scored a season-high 24 points to help Canon-McMillan down Baldwin, 52-42, in a Section 2 game in Class 6A on Monday night.
Jenna Cromp had 11 rebounds for the Big Macs (3-5, 6-8), who outscored Baldwin in each quarter. The Big Macs snapped a six-game losing streak by pulling away in the fourth quarter with 14-8 run.
Lexi Bernotas scored 13 points and Anna Lucarelli contributed 10 for the Highlanders (2-7, 7-8).
Belle Vernon 51, West Mifflin 41: Lindsay Steeber scored 28 points and Belle Vernon dealt a blow to West Mifflin’s playoff hopes with a 51-41 victory on the Titans’ home court.
Belle Vernon (6-3, 9-6), which sits in fourth place in Class 4A Section 3, swept the season series from fifth-place West Mifflin (4-5, 5-8).
The Leopards won with a big second quarter. After trailing 9-8 after the first quarter, Belle Vernon outscored the Titans 16-7 over the next eight minutes and pushed the lead to 34-23 after three quarters.
Steeber was the lone Belle Vernon player to score in doduble figures. She did much of her scoring at the free-throw line, making 14 of 16 attempts. The Leopards were 23-for-29 at the stripe.
Peters Township 68, Connellsville 19: Undefeated Peters Township just keeps on rolling.
Makenna Marisa almost had a triple-double and the Indians rolled to a 68-19 thumping of Connellsville in Clas 6A Section 2.
Marisa had 26 points, 13 rebounds and eight assists as PT improve dto 9-0 in section and 14-0 overall. Journey Thompson had another strong game with 15 points.
The Indians led 23-11 after one quarter, then held Connellsville (1-8, 5-11) scoreless in the second quarter to open a 44-11 halftime lead.
Mapletown 45, Jefferson-Morgan 38: Abby Antill and Kelsi Smith combined for 27 points in Mapletown’s 45-38 victory over Jefferson-Morgan in a Section 2-A game.
Antill led the way with 14 points and Smith tossed in 13 for the Maples (4-4, 8-7), who have won three straight games.
Jefferson-Morgan (1-6, 4-11) was led by Brynn Boyd’s 16 points. Autumn Gustovich scored 9 points and had 10 assists.
South Park 70, Washington 46: Three players accounted for all but five points as South Park rolled past Washington, 70-46, in a Section 2 game in Class 3A.
Maura Huwalt led the way with 35 points, Cassidy Zandier poured in 16 points and Danielle Deprospo chipped in with 14 points for the Eagles (8-1, 9-6), who led 30-22 at halftime and 51-32 after three.
Carley Allen led Washington (7-2, 12-4) with 12 points and Torri Finley flipped in 11 points.
Frazier 58, Fort Cherry 38: Frazier won its seventh straight game, 58-38, over Fort Cherry in Class 2A Section 3.
The Commodores (7-1, 11-5) had a 31-26 halftime lead but took control in the third quarter and outscored the Rangers, 19-7, for a 50-33 advantage going into the fourth.
Frazier’s Brooke Poling had a game-high 22 points. Teammate Sierra Twigg added 12.
Abby Cooper led Fort Cherry (4-4, 6-9) in scoring with 17 points.
In other games: Elizabeth Forward used a big first half to defeat Ringgold 62-45 in Class 4A Section 3. Bishop Canevin, the Class 2A Section 3 leader, rolled over Bentworth 102-24. The McGuffey at Charleroi game in Class 3A Section 2 was postponed and rescheduled for Jan. 29 at 7 p.m.
