Small college basketball roundup: Cal women knock off No. 1-ranked IUP

Seairra Barrett scored a game-high 18 points, Jiahna Flood-Francis had 17 and California University’s women’s basketball team made seven free throws in the final 25 seconds to upset undefeated and No. 1-ranked Indiana 61-56 Wednesday night in a PSAC West Division game at the Kovalchick Complex.

The win moves California (16-1 overall) into a tie for first place in the West with IUP (15-1). Both teams are 10-1 in the conference. They will meet again Feb. 23 at the Convocation Center.

Cal, ranked No. 13 in NCAA Division II, trailed by as many as eight points in the second quarter but rallied to take a 35-30 halftime lead. The Vulcans led for almost the entire second half, though a driving layup by IUP’s Brittany Robinson, who had a team-high 16 points, cut Cal’s lead to 54-53 with 32 seconds remaining.

Vulcans point guard Bianaca Jasper made two free throws with 25 seconds left and an IUP turnover set up another free throw by Jasper that made it a four-point game with 17 seconds to play.

IUP’s Ana Hollen, who had 11 points, made a three-pointer that made it a one-point game, but Flood-Francis sank two free throws with nine seconds left to push Cal’s lead to 59-56.

IUP then missed a three-point attempt from the top of the key and the rebound was grabbed by Cal’s Gina Vallecorsa, who converted two free throws with two seconds left. Vallecorsa finished with 14 points.

Barrett had 10 rebounds for Cal, which had a huge advantage at the free-throw line, converting 17 of 26 attempts. IUP was only 4-for-5 at the line.

Wash & Jeff 56, Geneva 43: Danielle Parker scored 14 points and Washington & Jefferson remained tied for the Presidents’ Athletic Conference lead with a 56-43 victory over Geneva.

The Presidents (9-1, 13-5), who are tied with Saint Vincent atop the standings, have won 11 in a row. Geneva (0-10, 2-15) has lost 11 straight.

W&J led by only 26-21 at halftime but pulled away by outscoring the Golden Tornadoes 20-12 in the third quarter.

Allie Seto had 12 points and a team-high eight rebounds for the Presidents, who did not make a free throw in the game. W&J was 0-for-2 at the line but won by holding Geneva to only 14 field goals.

Callie Ford led Geneva with 15 points.

Waynesburg 70, Chatham 59: Brooke Fuller scored 22 points and Waynesburg outscored host Chatham 24-7 in the fourth quarter to charge from behind for a 70-59 victory in the PAC.

Chatham (5-5, 9-10) led 52-46 entering the fourth quarter but made only one of 17 shots over the final 10 minutes. Waynesburg (3-7, 5-13) scored the first 12 points of the fourth quarter to take the lead and never trailed again.

Fuller, who made 10 of 14 shots, led the Waynesburg offense. Andrea Orlosky followed with 19 points. Both Fuller and Orlosky grabbed 11 rebounds.

Monica Starre scored 14 points for the Yellow Jackets.

Chatham, which made 10 three-pointers, was led by Megan Sieg’s 20 points.

Men’s results

Waynesburg 85, Chatham 76: Brennan Smith scored 27 points and Waynesburg used some stellar free-throw shooting to beat host Chatham 85-76 in a PAC game.

Waynesburg (4-6, 5-13) made 18 of 24 free throws. Chatham (5-5, 11-7), meanwhile, made 14 three-pointers but could convert on only four of 13 free throws.

Matt Popeck scored 17 points for Waynesburg and Frank Bozicevic had 12.

Geneva 73, Wash & Jeff 72: Ethan Moose scored 19 points and Geneva rallied in the last five minutes to edge Washington & Jefferson 73-72 in a PAC game.

Geneva (5-5, 8-10) trailed 66-55 with 5:26 remaining.

W&J (6-4, 8-11) lost despite shooting 53 percent and making 12 three-pointers. The Presidents, however, went more than four minutes down the stretch without a field goal.

Cameron Seeman led W&J with a game-high 22 points and Primo Zini had 13.

IUP 81, California 56: Malik Miller and Jacobo Diaz each scored 18 points and as PSAC West leader Indiana overpowered visiting California 81-56.

IUP (10-1, 17-1) broke the game open in the second half after leading 40-34 at halftime. Cal (4-7, 6-11) shot only 24 percent from the field in the second half and 35 percent for the game.

Marko Krivacevic scored 12 points, and Dante Lombardi had a double-double of 11 points and 10 assists for the Crimson Hawks.

Brent Pegram was the leading scorer for Cal with 18 points. Donté Williams finished with 13 points, and Zyna Collins and Collin MacAdams each scored 12.
