Small college basketball roundup: Sporio sparks Vulcans to 8th straight win
Abbey Sporio scored a game-high 22 points, Gina Vallecorsa had 18 and California University’s women’s basketball team ran its winning streak to eight games with a 91-62 thumping of Clarion in a PSAC West Division game.
The Vulcans (12-1, 18-1), who moved up to 10th in the NCAA Division II rankings this week, remain tied for first place in the division with IUP, which was a winner over Seton Hill.
Sporio had an outstanding all-around game as the guard made 10 of 13 shots and had six steals.
Vallercorsa made eight of her 10 shots and the Vulcans shot 59 percent for the game.
Seairra Barrett had another big game for Cal, scoring 14 points to go with five rebounds and five assists.
Jordan Bekelja had 17 points and Kadijah Dickson scored 13 for Clarion (1-12, 7-13), which has lost 10 straight.
Wash & Jeff 80, Westminster 68: Allie Seto scored a game-high 26 points, Danielle Parker had 20 and Washington & Jefferson used a big third quarter to pull away for an 80-68 victory over Westminster in a PAC game.
W&J (10-2, 14-6) led by only three points at halftime but outscored the Titans 25-13 in the third quarter to open a double-digit lead.
The Presidents’ free-throw shooting trumped Westminster’s long-range shooting. W&J made 21 of 29 free throws. Westminster (5-7, 7-14) made nine of 22 three-point attempts.
Seto made nine of 10 shots and led W&J on the boards with seven rebounds. Freshman guard Kylie McKennen had 15 assists to go with six rebounds, four steals and seven points.
Westminster’s Jackie Mathews scored a game-high 24 points, which included six treys.
Waynesburg 73, Geneva 65: Andrea Orlosky and Monica Starre each scored 18 points as Waynesburg held off pesky Geneva 73-65 in a PAC game at Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse.
Waynesburg (5-7, 7-14) shot 46 percent for the game but made 17 of 29 shots in the second half when it pulled away from the Golden Tornadoes (0-11, 2-17), who lost their 13th in a row. Starre was 9-for-11 from the field and had eight rebounds and four assists.
Haley Porter scored 14 points and Brooke Fuller gave Waynesburg four players in double figures by scoring 10 points. The Yellow Jackets’ starters scored 69 of the team’s 73 points.
Geneva was led in scoring by Callie Ford, who had a game-high 20 points, and Lauren Tipton, who followed with 19.
Men’s results
Waynesburg 72, Geneva 67: Brennan Smith made a tiebreaking basket with 35 seconds remaining and Waynesburg defeated visiting Geneva 72-67 in a Presidents’ Athletic Conference game.
Smith’s layup gave Waynesburg (5-7, 6-14) a 68-66 lead and the Yellow Jackets made four free throws in the final 19 seconds to seal the victory. Waynesburg was 12-for-12 at the free-throw line in the game.
The game was tight throughout as neither team led by more than eight points. Waynesburg had a 47-39 lead early in the second half before Geneva (5-6, 8-12) rallied and tied the score at 66-66 on Noah Domazo’s three-pointer with less than two minutes remaining.
Smith led Waynesburg in scoring with 19 points, Noah Gearhart had 17 and Matt Popeck 15.
Ethan Moose had a game-high 22 points for Geneva.
California 80, Clarion 63: Zyan Collins scored 24 points, Brent Pegram had 21 and california pulled away in the second half to defeat Clarion 80-63 in a PSAC West Division game at the Convocation Center.
Cal (5-8, 7-12) led by only 39-36 at halftime but scored 41 second-half points. Clarion hammered the Vulcans on the boards by a 40-21 margin but Cal made nine three-pointers and shot a blistering 57 percent for the game.
Collin MacAdams had 19 points for Cal and a game-high nine rebounds.
Jonathan Williams came off the bench to lead Clarion (2-11, 4-13) with 15 points.
Westminster 70, Wash & Jeff 67: Austin Armwood scored 18 points and Westminster made just enough free throws in the final 30 seconds to hold off Washington & Jefferson 70-67 in a PAC game on the Titans’ home court.
Westminster (6-6, 8-13) led 34-27 at halftime and by nine points early in the second half. W&J charged back in the second half and led 51-50 with less than seven minutes remaining.
Once Westminster regained the lead the Titans, who were 17 of 26 at the free-throw line, did enough there to hold off the Presidents, who received a game-high 20 points from Cameron Seeman.
Zach Queen and Primo Zini each had 12 points for the Presidents.
Westminster shot only 37 percent but forced 21 W&J turnovers.
