High school basketball roundup: Peters Township (18-0) keeps on rolling
Isabella Mills and Makenna Marisa each had a double-double and undefeated Peters Township blitzed host Hempfield with a big first quarter en route to a 63-30 girls basketball victory Thursday night that netted the Indians the Class 6A Section 2 title.
Peters Township (12-0, 18-0) raced to a whopping 22-1 lead after one quarter and was never threatened by Hempfield (2-10, 8-11), which had its two-game winning streak end.
Mills led the way with game highs of 17 points and 14 rebounds and Marisa was right behind with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Journey Thompson gave the Indians a third player in double figures as the freshman finished with 14 points.
Riley Sullenbarger led Baldwin with 11 points.
West Greene 58, Sewickley Academy 29: Madison Lampe, McKenna Lampe and Kaitlyn Rizor – each a 1,000-point career scorer – combined for 43 points to power West Greene to a 58-29 road victory over Sewickley Academy in a nonsection game Thursday afternoon.
West Greene (18-1) blitzed Sewickley Academy in the first quarter, racing out to a commanding 23-2 lead. The Pioneers cruised the rest of the way, holding the Panthers to single digits in both the third and fourth quarters.
Madison Lampe led West Greene in scoring with 18 points. Mckenna lampe followed with 13 points and Rizor was right behind with 12. The Lampe sisters and Rizor each have scored between 250 and 257 points for the season.
Sewickley Academy (9-5) received eight points Breanna Warner.
California 33, Monessen 32: California held host Monessen scoreless in the pivotal fourth quarter and made the game-winning basket with 16 seconds remaining as the Trojans for a 33-32 victory in Section 2-A.
California (7-4, 9-8), which has clinched a playoff berth, led 15-13 after one quarter before Monessen came back and took leads of 22-21 at halftime and 32-25 after three quarters. The Greyhounds then were outscored 8-0 in the final eight minutes.
Monessen hurt itself at the free-throw line, making only five of 18 attempts and missing the front end of a one-and-one with four seconds remaining.
Quitarah Hardison led Monessen in scoring with a game-high 11 points.
A win would have greatly enhanced Monessen’s playoff chances. The Greyhounds (4-6, 5-13) fell a half-game behind Mapletown for the final playoff berth from the section. Monessen already has a win over the Maples and will host Mapletown next week.
Mt. Lebanon 55, Canon-McMillan 29: Freshmen Ashley Connor and Morgan Palmer each scored in double figures and Mt. Lebanon rode a strong first half to a 55-29 victory over host Canon-McMillan in Class 6A Section 2.
Mt. Lebanon (9-3, 10-9) led 24-7 after one quarter and 38-17 at halftime, which enabled to the Blue Devils to overcome being held to four points in the third quarter.
Palmer led Lebo in scoring with 12 points and Palmer had 11.
Lacey Russell, with eight points, was the leading scorer for Canon-McMillan (5-7, 8-10), which had its playoff hopes take a hit with the loss.
