Wild Things pull out close one, edge Boomers
SCHAUMBURG, Ill. – The Wild Things were held to only five hits Saturday night but they made the most of them.
Saige Jenco scored from second base on a two-out single by J.J. Fernandez in the seventh inning to break a tie, giving Washington a 5-4 victory over Schuamburg at Boomers Stadium.
The Wild Things fell behind 3-0 early but scored three times in the fourth inning – two on a single by Ryan Cox – and took a 4-3 lead in the fifth when a single by Cody Erickson scored Brett Marr.
The Bommers tied the score in the sixth but Jenco reached base in the seventh on one of Schaumburg’s three errors.
Nick Durazo (1-2), the second of four Washington pitchers, was the winner. Zach Strecker pitched the final two innings for his ninth save.
Scahumburg got a leadoff double in the bottom of the ninth inning but Strecker was able to get three consecutive groundouts to end the game and send Washington to only its third win in the last nine games. The Wild Things are now 3-11 in one-run games.
Schaumburg’s Quincy Nieporte went 3-for-4 and drove in two runs. The Boomers had 13 hits.
The teams will conclude their three-game series to open the second half of the Frontier League season with an afternoon game today.
