West Greene, DuBois Central Catholic semifinal switched
The third PIAA Class A semifinal meeting between the West Greene and DuBois Central Catholic softball teams scheduled for Monday was suspended because of the threat of inclement weather.
It joined a long list of changes made by the PIAA, including all semifinal games that involved WPIAL baseball and softball teams being pushed back.
The Pioneers, aiming for a fourth consecutive state championship appearance, will play DuBois Central Catholic today at Slippery Rock University. The game has been moved up to a noon start time.
This will be the third time in the last four years the two teams will meet in the semifinals. West Greene won both games, 5-2 in 2016 and 9-5 in 2017. The winner will play either Williams Valley or Millersburg, which also was moved to today, in Friday’s PIAA Class A Championship at Penn State University.
DuBois Central Catholic (16-9) is the District 9 champion. The Cardinals haven’t lost a game on the field this season but were forced to forfeit games because of a roster error. To advance to the semifinals, they defeated Leechburg, 14-4, and finished a come-from-behind victory against Claysburg-Kimmel, 6-5.
West Greene (21-4) opened the state tournament with an 8-1 win over Rockwood. The Pioneers then held off a late comeback from Clarion to defeat the Bobcats in the quarterfinals, 5-4.
