It was appropriate that Daniel Layton competed in the high hurdles and pole vault because no one had more ups and downs to his track & field season than the senior from Waynesburg. Layton was caught in the web of WPIAL bureaucracy when a simple mistake was made. While finalizing the performance list for athletes and what events they planned to compete in for the WPIAL Championships, Waynesburg track coach Rick Layton, Daniel’s father, meant to remove his son from the 300 intermediate hurdles. Instead, he scratched Daniel from the 110 hurdles, his best event. The mistake was discovered days before the meet and an appeal was made to change it to the WPIAL, which was denied. The PIAA, however, reversed the WPIAL and Daniel Layton competed in the 110 hurdles at the WPIAL Championships. Layton won both the 110 hurdles and the pole vault at the WPIAL Championships in Slippery Rock, and went to a first-place finish in the Class AA 110 high hurdles at the state championships in Shippensburg with a time of 14.53.
