Field hockey MVP – Megan Casciola
There is an old sports adage that goes like this: Offense sells tickets but defense wins championships. The Peters Township field hockey team put the latter part of that saying to the test this season and proved it to be true. With a stifling and relentless attack, Peters Township used a defense-first approach and won the WPIAL Class 3A championship, defeating Pine-Richland 2-1 in overtime in the finals. The Indians won a section title, and in the process did not give up a goal. Then, in the opening round of the WPIAL playoffs, PT blanked Norwin. The goal by Pine-Richland in the title game was the only one allowed all season by Peters Township to a WPIAL opponent. The last line of the Indians’ defense was senior goalie Megan Casciola, who was named first team All-WPIAL. Casciola, who will play in college next fall at Mount Union, was helped by a solid defense in front of her that included Maddie Devine, Emma Devine, Adrianna Costanza and Kyra Cunningham, a group the Indians dubbed the “Steel Curtain.”
