Belle Vernon’s Shahan swims to PIAA title

LEWISBURG – Belle Vernon sophomore Ian Shahan won the gold medal in the boys 100-yard butterfly Wednesday night at the PIAA Swimming Championships.

Shanahan had a winning time of 48.83 seconds, which was .09 faster than runner-up Jake Houck of Donegal. Adam mahler of Holy Redeemer was third in 49.03.

Shahan advanced to the finals by finishing fourth in the preliminaries with a time of 50.15, about a half second slower than his WPIAL gold medal time.

Teammate Robert Spekis had the third-fastest time in the 200 IM prelims, touching the wall in 1:56.85, about a half second faster than his WPIAL gold medal-winning time. In the finals, Spekis finished third in 1:56.84, which was more than three seconds off the winning time of Danny Berlitz from Marian Catholic.

Shahan and Spekis each were on the Leopards’ 200 medley relay team that placed seventh in 1:39.35 and the 200 freestyle relay team that was eighth in 1:30.89.
