Water polo
Washington & Jefferson dropped two matches, 14-1 to Salem University and 13-8 to Wittenberg over the weekend.
Against Salem, the Presidents fell behind 3-1 after the first quarter before allowing four goals in the second to trail 7-1 at halftime. Salem outscored W&J by a 7-0 margin in the third and fourth quarters. Sophomore attacker Marissa Whitby registered the lone goal during the match for W&J.
Against Wittenberg, W&J jumped to an early 3-2 lead after the first quarter. Wittenberg battled back by outscoring W&J by a 6-1 margin in the second to take an 8-4 lead after two quarters. The Presidents pulled within one score, 8-7, after using a 3-0 run in the third quarter. The host Tigers pulled away for the victory by using a 5-1 spurt in the fourth to win by a 13-8 final.
Chloe Magyari led W&J with three goals.
Pirates top Red Sox
Starling Marte hit a three-run homer and stole a base in Pittsburgh’s 8-1 win over Boston. Jameson Taillon allowed an unearned run in five innings, striking out six.
In the NHL
Sam Reinhart scored the deciding goal in the shootout to lead the Buffalo Sabres to a 4-3 win over the St. Louis Blues. After Jack Eichel and Tyler Bozak traded goals to open the shootout session, Reinhart scored on Buffalo’s final attempt when he got just enough on his wrist shot to get it past Jake Allen, who got a piece of it with his glove.
- Philipp Grubauer made 22 saves for his third shutout in his last five starts, and the Colorado Avalanche beat the New Jersey Devils 3-0. Tyson Barrie scored twice as Colorado (31-29-12) stayed in the mix for a second straight playoff appearance.
In the NBA
Nikola Vucevic had 27 points and 20 rebounds to lead the Orlando Magic to a 101-91 win over the Atlanta Hawks. Aaron Gordon added 22 points and eight rebounds for the Magic, who remained a game behind Miami in the chase for the final Eastern Conference playoff spot. Trae Young led the Hawks with 20 points.
