High school softball roundup: Waynesburg opens with 2 wins

Waynesburg opened its season Friday in Pigeon Forge, Tenn., with a pair of two-run victories.

The Raiders started with a 6-4 win in nine innings over Tallmadge, Ohio. The Raiders scored two runs in the top of the ninth to win the game. In the second game, Waynesburg scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth to come from behind and beat Granville, Ohio, 5-3.

Sophomore Meghan Braun was the winning pitcher in each game. She walked only two batters over 16 innings.

Against Tallmadge, Waynesburg won in the international tiebreaker format. The Raiders started the ninth with a runner on second base and scored on a single and wild pitch. The final run crossed the plate on a groundout.

Waynesburg trailed 3-2 entering the bottom of the sixth against Granville. The Raiders’ first two runs came on a home run by Rachel Elsenheimer, who had a double against Tallmadge.

Erin Fitch, who was 3-for-3 with two runs, singled to start the sixth and Elsenheimer followed by reaching on an error. That set up Ehralyn Eisiminger’s two-run single that gave Waynesburg the lead.

• Maddie Blaker threw a three-hitter and struck out 11 as Mapletown won its season opener 14-2 over host Turkeyfoot.

Mapletown scored 10 runs in the top of the second inning to take a 12-0 lead and cruised the rest of the way behind Blaker, who walked only one batter.

Faith Burkholder-Walters went 3-for-3 and Hannah Hartley had two doubles to lead Mapletown’s 14-hit attack. Taylor Dusenberry belted a triple and McKenzie Reda had a double.

• The West Greene Pioneers fell to 0-2 to start the season after a 1-0 loss to St. Joseph Academy of Ohio at the Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Jade Renner was saddled with the loss, striking out 3 and walking 1. Madison Lampe was 2-for-3, and McKenna Lampe had the other hit for West Greene. St. Joseph scored the only run of the game with a sacrifice fly to left field in the bottom of the sixth inning. On the same play, Madison Lampe relayed the throw from Jersey Wise to gun down a potential second run at the plate.

Maya Jackson picked up the win for St. Joseph, striking out 16.
