High school roundup: Robinson’s big day helps Waynesburg upend McGuffey
It was the Luke Robinson show Friday.
The junior from Waynesburg hit two home runs, a double, scored three runs and drove in four runs in a 5-1 victory over McGuffey in a Class 3A Section 3 baseball game Friday afternoon.
Robinson also pitched six innings, striking out 11 and allowing just one unearned run.
The win jumbles up the section even more, creating a three-way tie for second place in the standings between McGuffey, Waynesburg and Beth-Center. All three have clinched a playoff berth and have a pair of section games remaining.
Tyler Switalski went 3-for-4 with a double and three runs for the Raiders (7-3, 8-4).
Ryan Sullivan scored the run for McGuffey (7-3, 8-5).
South Park 6, Ringgold 4: Leading from the start after a two-run first inning, South Park held off multiple Ringgold comebacks to hand the Rams their second consecutive loss, 6-4, in a Class 4A Section 3 game.
It is the first time Ringgold (9-3, 10-5) lost back-to-back games since the opening two games of the season.
Jake Mittleider and Kevin Vaupel both had three hits for South Park (7-5, 11-6). The Eagles limited Ringgold to two runs in the third and fifth innings and never lost their lead.
South Park scored two runs in the third to lead 4-2 after three. It then added one run in both the fourth and fifth inning for insurance.
Koby Bubash tripled and homered for the Rams, driving in two RBI and scoring twice.
Canon-McMillan 3, Brashear 2: Casey Burke walked with the bases loaded to break a tie and score Noah Burke in the fifth inning as Canon-McMillan edged Brashear, 3-2, in a much-needed Class 6A Section 3 win.
The game was tied at 2-2 entering the fifth with both teams scoring one run in the second and third innings.
The win keeps defending state champion Canon-McMillan (5-5, 9-7) in the hunt for a playoff spot with a pair of section games remaining.
Brashear falls to 0-11 in the section and 0-13 overall.
Monessen 3, West Greene 2: Cam Frolo raced home to score the game-winning pitch an inning prior to the game being called because of inclement weather as Monessen edged West Greene 3-2 in a Class A Section 2 game.
West Greene (6-5, 10-7) took a 2-0 lead in the third innings on an ground out by Corey Wise that scored a run and a RBI single by Kasey Miller.
Monessen (8-2, 9-6) then scored three runs unanswered, including two in the fourth inning to tie the game at 2-2.
Frolo earned the win for the Greyhounds. Jack Sacco picked up a one-inning save.
Jefferson-Morgan 5, Avella 0: Bryce Bedilion only allowed three hits and struck out seven to lead Jefferson-Morgan to a 5-0 victory over Class A Section 2 foe Avella.
Jefferson-Morgan (5-4, 5-8) broke a scoreless tie in the fourth inning with three runs. The Rockets added insurance runs in both the fifth and seventh innings.
Jake Broadwater went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI for J-M. Easton Hanko doubled and Liam Ankrom drove in a pair of runs.
Kenneth Rush had a double for Avella (4-7, 5-9).
Mapletown 18, Geibel Catholic 4: Matt Atwood earned his first career win and Mapletown won its first game of the season with a convincing 18-4 six-inning victory over Geibel Catholic Class A Section 2.
Atwood, who came on in relief with no outs in the first inning, pitched all six innings and struck out six. He only allowed one run.
Mapletown (1-8, 1-11) provided Atwood with plenty of assistance to secure his first victory. The Maples had 15 hits – seven that went for extra bases – and played error-free in the field.
Lance Stevenson, Clay Menear and Zach Rockwell each had three hits for the Maples. Stevenson scored three runs and drove had three RBI. Menear scored four times and had five stolen bases.
Geibel falls to 0-7 in the section and 0-9 overall.
Softball
Waynesburg 13, Brownsville 4: Rachel Elsenheimer had a pair of hits, drove in five runs and scored twice to lead Waynesburg over Brownsville in its Class 3A Section 3 finale, 13-4, in five innings.
Elsenheimer doubled and homered for the Raiders, who scored three runs in both the first and second inning before exploding for seven runs in the third to lead 13-4.
Kylee Goodman doubled and drove in three runs for Waynesburg (5-7, 8-8). Kaylee Turcheck and Erin Fitch also had multi-hit games for the Raiders.
Emily Bohna homered and drove in a pair of runs for Brownsville (0-11, 5-13).
West Greene 10, Mapletown 0: Jade Renner threw a five-inning, complete-game shutout and didn’t allow a hit as West Greene cruised to a 10-0 victory over visiting Mapletown in its Class A Section 2 finale.
Renner struck out eight and then helped her own cause with a pair of hits to drive in four runs for the Pioneers. Kaitlyn Rizor went 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles. She scored three times and had two RBI. Mackenzie Carpenter also brought home two runs for West Greene (10-0, 14-3).
Mapletown (6-4, 9-4) committed five errors.
