High school baseball roundup: Carmichaels assured of at least share of section title
Zach Gamble and Stush Ferek combined for four doubles and five RBI, powering Class 2A Section 1 baseball leader Carmichaels to a 7-2 victory over host Bentworth on Monday.
It was the 11th consecutive victory for Carmichaels (10-1, 14-1), which clinched at least a share of the section title. The Mikes can win the championship outright with a victory at home over Brownsville on Wednesday or if Fort Cherry defeats Chartiers-Houston.
Gamble and Ferek, the Nos. 5 and 6 hitters in the lineup, each smacked two doubles with Gamble driving in three runs.
Winning pitcher Logan Mayhle went six innings and struck out six.
Michael Vittone had two of the three hits by Bentworth (3-8, 7-10).
Chartiers-Houston 3, Burgettstown 2: Chartiers-Houston kept its section title hopes alive with a 3-2 come-from-behind win over visiting Burgettstown in Class 2A Section 1.
The Bucs (9-2, 11-4) trailed 2-1 after one inning but winning pitcher Ryan Parise and reliever Josh Colletti combined to pitch shutout ball the rest of the way. Chartiers-Houston tied the score in the fourth when Colletti hit a two-out RBI single and Jimmy Sadler followed with a single that scored Alex Siege and gave the Bucs a 3-2 lead.
Parise went six innings for the win and Colletti got the final three outs for a save.
Scott Ferris doubled for Burgettstown (2-9, 4-11) and drove in one of the Blue Devils’ first-inning runs.
Mt. Lebanon 4, Peters Township 2: Mt. Lebanon scored four runs in the bottom of the third inning and the Blue Devils edged Peters Township 4-2 in a game that shook up the Class 6A Section 3 standings.
The loss, combined with Bethel Park’s victory over Canon-McMillan, knocked PT (8-3, 11-6) out of first place in the section. It also moved Mt. Lebanon (6-5, 10-9) into sole possession of fourth place and the final playoff berth from the section. The Blue Devils are one game ahead of Canon-McMillan.
PT took a 1-0 lead on an RBI single by Jackson McCloskey in the top of the third but Lebo answered in its half. The Blue Devils had three consecutive run-scoring singles with one out and an RBI double by Jack Smith.
Winning pitcher Jeffrey Dengler went 6 2/3 innings and Cam Knox got the final out for a save.
Joe Ehland had a triple for the Indians.
Bethel Park 8, Canon-McMillan 0: Anthony Strangis drove in three runs to help Bethel Park deal Canon-McMillan an 8-0 loss in Section 3 of Class 6A.
Canon-McMillan’s loss, coupled with Mt. Lebanon’s win over Peters Township, puts C-M in a must-win situation against PT tomorrow.
Anthony Chiccit doubled and drove in two for Bethel Park (8-2, 12-3).
Noah Burks had two of the five singles for Canon-McMillan (5-6, 9-8).
Jefferson-Morgan 20-20, Geibel 0-0: Jefferson-Morgan combined to outscore Geibel, 40-0, in a Section 2-A doubleheader. Jefferson-Morgan won two three-inning games by the same score, 20-0.
In the first game, Jefferson-Morgan took advantage of 17 walks by Geibel pitching. Winning pitcher Kyle Clayton allowed one run, doubled, scored four runs and drove in three for Jefferson-Morgan (7-4, 7-8). Logan Rhodes scored twice and drove in three runs.
In Game 2, Jefferson-Morgan had four doubles. Bryce Bedilion had two of them drove in two and scored four times. Jake Broadwater double and brought home three. Justin Maddich went 4-for-4 with three runs and three RBI and Liam Ankrom doubled, knocked in three and scored twice.
Geibel is 0-9 and 0-13.
Trinity 12, Montour 7: A seven-run fifth inning sent Trinity to a 12-7 win over Montour in a Section 3 game in Class 5A.
Clarence Pomykayla doubled and drove in three for the Hillers (5-6, 9-10), who are fourth in the section. Brent Kurtz went 2-for-2 and had four RBI from the No. 9 spot. Jax Banco had two RBI.
Anthony Tambelline and Matt Luchovick each had two RBI for Montour (7-4, 11-8).
Moon 7, South Fayette 2: Zac Bogats went 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI to help Moon down South Fayette in a Section 2 game in Class 5A.
Tony Tamilla and Shane Wockley each had two RBI for Moon (4-5, 9-6). Eli Snider drove in both runs for South Fayette (4-5, 10-6). The two teams are tied for fourth place in the section.
McGuffey 5, Southmoreland 0: Ryan Sullivan did not allow a run and struck out 10 in McGuffey’s 5-0 victory over Southmoreland in a Section 3-AAA game.
Seth Burgdolt had a double and two RBI for McGuffey (8-3, 9-5). Sullivan and Brayden Kay each had two hits and an RBI.
Southmoreland falls to 0-9, 2-12.
Monessen 17, Mapletown 0: Marcus Tansmore doubled and drove in four runs, and Nathan Lynch and Cam Frolo combined on a two-hitter as Monessen blanked Mapletown 17-0 in a five-inning Section 2-A game.
Vincenzo Rhome doubled and Frolo had three singles and drove in two runs for the Greyhounds, who are 9-2 in section, 10-6 overall and have won five in a row. Sonny Thomas drove in three runs.
