Wild Things edged by River City
O’FALLON, Mo. – Cody Livesay scored on a tiebreaking single by Trevor Achenbach in the bottom of the eighth inning, giving the River City Rascals a 3-2 victory over the Wild Things on Friday afternoon at CarShield Field.
Washington, which rallied from a four-run deficit to win in 11 innings Thursday night, took a 2-1 lead into the sixth but River City rallied to even the season-opening Frontier League series.
The Wild Things’ Hector Roa led off the top of the second with a home run to make the score 1-1. Preston Scott followed with a single and gave Washington a 2-1 lead when he scored on a single by Mick Fennell.
The lead held until the sixth, when River City scored after having two outs and nobody on base. A hit batsman and wild pitch set up Braxton Martinez’s RBI double.
Washington outhit River City 11-6 but scored in only one inning and left 11 runners on base.
Wild Things starting pitcher John Havird, who played the last two seasons with Traverse City, allowed two runs over six innings. Tyler Barss (0-1) followed with 1 1/3 innings of relief.
Through two games, Washington pitchers have struck out 22 batters and issued only two walks, but a leadoff free pass to Livesay and ensuing stolen base set up Achenbach’s game-winning hit.
