Pete Alonso didn’t need a big swing in the ninth inning – just a good eye. Alonso hit his major league-leading 49th homer, then drew a bases-loaded walk during a four-run rally in the ninth that sent the New York Mets over the Colorado Rockies 7-4 Wednesday.

  • Mark Canha knew it was just a matter of time before the right pitch would come. He waited, and his patience paid off. Canha hit an RBI double with two outs in the 11th inning and the Oakland Athletics edged the Kansas City Royals 1-0 Wednesday to hold their lead atop the AL wild-card race.

WVU to open Big 12 schedule with KansasWest Virginia will open the Big 12 basketball season on the road at Kansas on Jan. 4.

The Big 12 released the league portion of the schedule Wednesday.

After playing the Jayhawks, West Virginia plays at Oklahoma State on Jan. 6 before playing its home league opener against Texas Tech on Jan. 11.

Other league home games include TCU on Jan. 14, Texas on Jan. 20, Kansas State on Feb. 1, Iowa State on Feb. 5, Kansas on Feb. 12, Oklahoma State on Feb. 18, Oklahoma on Feb. 29 and Baylor on March 7.

In addition to the opening weekend, West Virginia also has back-to-back Big 12 road games Feb. 22 at TCU and Feb. 24 at Texas.

West Virginia opens the season at home Nov. 8 against Akron.

HBO to program Penn State

HBO Sports is going behind the scenes with the football programs at Arizona State, Florida, Penn State and Washington State for four episodes of its “24/7” documentary series.

HBO announced Wednesday it will run an hour-long episode for each team, starting Oct. 2 with Florida preparing for its Sept. 28 game against Towson. The Penn State episode will debut Oct. 9 and chronicle the Nittany Lions’ preparations for Purdue on Oct. 5.

The Arizona State episode will debut Oct. 16 and follow the Sun Devils as they prepare for Washington State on Oct. 12. The Washington State episode will debut Oct. 23, following coach Mike Leach’s team up to its game against Colorado.

The series will be narrated by Liev Schreiber, who is also the voice of HBO’s popular NFL training camp series, “Hard Knocks.”

College soccer

Playing its first game in more than 10 days, the California University men’s soccer team suffered a 4-0 loss against Roberts Wesleyan (N.Y.) in non-conference play on Wednesday evening at the Phillipsburg Soccer Facility.

The Vulcans fell to 0-3 overall with all three matches being against teams from different states. Meanwhile, the Redhawks earned their first victory of the year and move 1-3-1 overall.

Boys soccer

Exploding for five second-half goals, Belle Vernon cruised to a 6-0 victory over Albert Gallatin in a Section 3-AAA match.

Daniel Sassak, the leading goal scorer for the Leopards, gave Belle Vernon (6-0, 9-0) a 1-0 lead at the half. Niko Apodiakos, Hunter Meade, Dylan Rathway and two goals from Eliseo Rodriguez helped Belle Vernon pull away in the second half.

Albert Gallatin falls to 2-3 in the section and 5-3 overall.

  • Cam Frolo scored five goals to help Monessen cruise by Washington 8-1 in a nonsection match.

Charles Mrlack III, Dawayne Howell and Morgan Madison each had a goal for the Greyhounds (1-7). Goalkeeper Jack Sacco made 5 saves in the first half. Morgan Madison and Che Hill combined to make three saves in the second half.

Washington fell to 0-6.

Girls soccer

Bentworth took sole possession of first place in Section 2-A with a 4-0 victory over Chartiers-Houston.

Jocelyn Timlin and Rori Schreiber each scored twice for the Bearcats (5-0, 8-1). Jasmine Manning recorded the shutout.

Chartiers-Houston fell to 4-1 in the section, 5-4 overall.

  • Rhea Kijowski and her sister Jillian combined for six goals and five assists in an 11-0 victory over South Allegheny in a Section 3-AA match.
  • Rhea Kijowski scored four goals and had two assists and her sister Jillian had two goals and seven assists for the Raiders (3-2, ,4-2). Ashlynn Basinger had a hat trick and an assist. Brenna Benke and Kylie Sinn also scored.McKenzie Booth stopped seven shots for her second save.
  • Hannah Stuck had a hat trick in Peters Toownship’s 9-1 win over Baldwin in a Section 2 match in Class 4A.

Also scoring for PT were Brooke Opferman, CeCe Scott, Mia Gentile, Maddie Sweiger, Irene Doleno and Sarah Heisinger.

Baldwin fell to 2-4 and 2-4-1.

  • McGuffey used a balanced attack with five different players scoring a goal as the Highlanders downed Charleroi, 5-1, in a Section 2-A match.

Jordan Sekora, Brynn Klerr, Cameron Moore, Lola Yendell and Sensi Yendell scored for McGuffey (4-1, 5-3).

Charleroi falls to 1-4 in section and 1-6 overall.

  • Trinity couldn’t hang on to an early lead as it fell to Section 3-AAA foe Thomas Jefferson, 5-1.

Courtney Lowe gave Trinity (3-2-1, 3-2-1) a 1-0 lead in the first half.

The Jaguars then scored five unanswered goals, including two before halftime, en route to the victory.

Thomas Jefferson improves to 3-2 in the section and 4-3-1 overall.
