Girls Cross Country MVP: Emily Carter, Bethel Park
Records are made to be broken and while Emily Carter shattered many marks during the cross country season, that was never her intent.
“I don’t really try to break records,” said the Bethel Park junior. “I’m just trying to do my best.”
Best times meant many medals this fall.
After taking the bronze in the WPIAL Championships on Oct. 25 on the California University course in 19:04, Carter shaved 47 seconds off that time and secured silver in the state finals in Hershey. Carter, who finished in 18:11, trailed only Mia Cochran.
Carter blazed the trail during all her invitationals.
She smashed the Red, White and Blue mark with a time of 17:41.85, broke the meet record in winning the Marty Uher Invitational at Cal, shattered a 35-year-old record in winning the Mingo Classic with a 17:19.84 time and clocked a 17:57.40 to win the Tri-State Coaches Association meet.
During the winter, Carter finished second and third in the 3,000-meter and mile events, respectively, during the PTFCA Indoor State Championships.
Carter was the defending WPIAL and PIAA champion in 3,200 run but the coronavirus pandemic canceled the spring outdoor track season. Carter holds the state record (10:16.02) in the event.
