Girls Tennis Co-MVPs: Kat Wang and Marra Bruce, Peters Township
Separately, Kat Wang and Marra Bruce are very good tennis players.
United, they are unstoppable.
In fact, the Peters Township pair combined to become champions. They won both the state and district championships last fall.
“It’s a great combination. One-two punch,” said PT head coach Phyllis DeRienzo.
In the PIAA Class AAA championship match played at the Hershey Racquet Club, Bruce and Wang defeated Radnor’s duo of Kannon Ciarrocchi and Lucy Hedrick, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2. They won the WPIAL Class AAA doubles title with a straight-set victory, 6-2, 6-0, over Jenna Bell and Carolin Walters from Latrobe in the finals played at the Oxford Athletic Club in Wexford.
During the team portion of the season, Bruce played No. 1 singles for the Indians while Wang competed in the No. 2 slot. They led the Indians to the WPIAL team title. In the finals played at the Alpha Tennis Club in Harmarville, PT edged Fox Chapel, 3-2, with Wang winning the decisive match, 6-3, 0-6, 6-3, against Carissa Shepard.
Since Bruce is a freshman and Wang is a sophomore, they have promising careers. They have strong bloodlines.
Bruce’s mother, Marcie, was a state champion at Mt. Lebanon before excelling at the College of Charleston. Her brother, Connor, was a PIAA state doubles champion and WPIAL singles winner before becoming Dayton’s Rookie of the Year this spring.
Wang’s older brother, Nathan, played line one doubles for the Indians before he took his talents to Washington & Jefferson College.
