Belle Vernon’s reward: No. 1 seed in Class 4A
After beating Thomas Jefferson and McKeesport this month, Belle Vernon got its reward: a top seed and first-round bye in the WPIAL Class 4A playoffs.
The Leopards beat Thomas Jefferson, 28-21, in Week 5 and McKeesport, 46-15, in Week 10. That put their record at 6-0 in the conference and 8-0 overall.
Games begin Friday.
Other top seeds included Mt. Lebanon in Class 6A, Moon in Class 5A, Central Valley in Class 3A, Steel Valley in Class 2A and Clairton in Class A.
Five championship games will be played at Heinz Field from Nov. 26-27. The Class 6A final is a week earlier, at 7 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 20 at Norwin.
In first-round games locally, Canon-McMillan travels to North Allegheny in Class 6A, Peters Township is at North Hills in Class 5A, either New Castle or Highlands visits Belle Vernon in Class 4A, Beth-Center travels to Steel Valley, Washington entertains New Brighton, Chartiers-Houston hosts Mohawk, and McGuffey travels to Laurel in Class AA. And in Class A, West Greene hosts Springdale, Mapletown visits at Rochester, Monessen travels to Cornell, California is at Leechburg, Burgettstown visits Bishop Canevin and Shenango has one of the longest travel times getting to Carmichaels.
Sto-Rox had its home game against Shady Side Academy moved to Peters Township because of concerns about security. Last week’s game was played at Carlynton.
