Small college roundup: Mitchell leads W&J to tournament win

Kyran Mitchell scored 26 poinnts to help Washington & Jefferson take a 90-72 victory over Grove City in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference men’s tournament.

Noah Gearhart poured in 17 points and J.R. Mazza scored 18 points on six three-point field goals for W&J (21-4).

Ben Rose scored 13 points and Elijah White had a double-double, 12 points and 14 rebounds, for Grove City (10-15).

Waynesburg 60, Geneva 59: Waynesburg University’s basketball team found out what life is like without Matt Popeck in the lineup. Popeck, who sprained his and in a game over the weekend and sat out Tuesday’s quarterfinal game against Geneva in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference men’s basketball tournament.

So Nijon Kirkman stepped up in a big way, scoring 28 points and pulling down 17 rebounds.

Kirkman’s biggest shots came with 3 seconds to play when he hit two free throws to give Waynesburg a 60-59 victory over Geneva.

Waynesburg (13-12) advances to the semifinals Thursday. Geneva ends the season with a 14-9 record.

The two teams have played three times this year with the visitors winning all three.

Lyle Tipton hit two free throws for two of his 22 points with 13 seconds left in the game to give Geneva a 59-58 lead.

Jansen Knotts was the only other player in double figures with 10 points for Waynesburg. Ryan Rachic scored 11 points and pulled down 13 rebounds for Geneva.

Women’s results

Wash & Jeff 77, Waynesburg 45: A balanced offensive attack, which led to a 53-18 advantage through the middle two quarters, paced Washington & Jefferson to a 77-45 victory of Waynesburg in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference Women’s Basketball Tournament.

Eleven players scored two or more points for the Presidents (20-4), who move onto Thursday’s semifinals.

Waynesburg season came to an end with a 6-19 record.

Sarah Berardelli and Bryn Bezjak led the Presidents with 12 points apiece. Berardelli also had seven rebounds, three blocks and three assists. Piper Morningstar scored 11 points and pulled down four rebounds and dished out three assists. She also had three of W&J’s eight blocked shots.

Brooke Fuller as the only player in double figures for Waynesburg. She had a double-double with 18 points and 14 rebounds. Anika Dansby had eight points and seven rebounds.

Waynesburg had a tough shooting night, converting just 17 of 67 shots (25.4 percent).
