High school wrestling: West Allegheny upsets top-ranked Trinity
West Allegheny won the final three bouts of the match and came away with a 35-31 victory over top-ranked Trinity in a Class 3A Section 5 dual meet Wednesday night.
Both teams are 3-1 in the section but West Allegheny owns the tiebreaker over the Hillers. Waynesburg is the leader at 4-0.
Trinity took a 31-26 lead into the final two bouts. Louis Martsoff, who had a 1-2 record, won a major decision over Brock Carrigan at 152 pounds to cut the Hillers lead to 31-30.
Returning state champion Ty Watters finished the match with a 27-11 technical fall over Robbie Allison.
Pins by Cael Nicolella at 189 pounds and Mason Kraeer at 215 and a West Allegheny forfeit at heavyweight gave Trinity an 18-4 lead.
West Allegheny began its comeback by winning three straight bouts off the turn to cut the Hillers lead to 20-18. Cade Stern (107) and Cooper Smith (121) had pins in that run and Caiden Harbert a major decisiob at 114.
TJ Allison won by forfeit at 127 and Luke Poland won a 12-1 major decision over AJ Snatchko at 133 pounds. Nick Jones gave Blake Reihner a close bout, losing 6-3. That gave Trinity a 31-20 lead.
Shawn Taylor began the match with a 13-5 major decision over Bodie Morgan of the Hillers.
Burgettstown 54, Beth-Center 16: Burgettstown wrapped up at least a share of first place and a postseason berth from Class 2A Section 1 with a 54-16 victory over Beth-Center.
Beth-Center is 4-2 in the section. The Bulldogs wrestle Jefferson-Morgan next week with the winner taking third place and the final postseason berth and the loser is eliminated.
Registering pins for the Blue Devils (5-0) were Parker Sentipal (114), Dylan Slovick (127), Gavin Suica (133), Joey Sentipal (139), Eric Kovach (160), Tyler Cody (215) and Joe Baronick (Hvy).
Tyler Berish (152) had the lone pin for the Bulldogs (4-2).
McGuffey 42, Jefferson-Morgan 20: Mc uffey won five straight bouts through the middle of the dual meet and defeated Jefferson-Morgan, 42-20, to wrap up a postseason berth in Class 2A, Section 1.
The Highlanders (5-1) can finish no worse than second place in the section. Jefferson-Morgan (4-2) wrestles Beth-Center next week for third place and the final postseason berth.
Emmett Wolfe (114), Lucas Barr (121), Victor Bonus (139) Reid Teagarden (145), Brenne Mullins (152), Kyle Brookman (172) and Logan Smith (Hvy) each won by fall for McGuffey.
Drew Adams (127), Chase Frameli (160) and Landon Heath had pins for the Rockets.
Waynesburg 46, Chartiers Valley 26:Waynesburg kept rolling in Class 3A, Section 5 with a 46-26 victory over Chartiers Valley.
Floyd Huff (106), Ky Szewczyk (114), two-time PIAA champion Mac Church (145), Brock Evans (152), Nate Jones (160), Brody Evans (189), returning PIAA champion Rocco Welsh (215) amd Eli Makel (Hvy) had pins for the Raiders.
South Fayette 48, Moon 12: South Fayette evened its record to 2-2 in Class 3A, Section 5 with a 48-12 win over Moon.
John Baiono (121), Christian Brandy (172) and Travis Watkins (215) had pins for the Lions.
West Greene 48, Washington 30: West Greene overcame an early 18-point deficit by stringing together six consecutive wins and went on to defeat Washington 48-30 in Class 2A Section 1.
Washington jumped out to an 18-0 lead after starting the match with pins by Caleb Patton (127), Beau Barlow (133) and Vonnie Woods (139).
West Greene, however, got a fall from Parker Smith (145) and three straight forfeits to turn the tide. John Lampe (189) and Colin White (215) each won by fall as the Pioneers pushed ahead.
The final four weight classes were forfeits.
Belle Vernon 45, Elizabeth Forward 9: Elijah Brown (152), Coulton Manown (170) and heavyweight Perry Riggle each won by fall, leading Belle Vernon to a 45-9 win over Elizabeth Forward in Class 2A Section 2.
There were only five bouts contested with Belle Vernon winning four. The Leopards’ Giovanni Weightman (138) won by an 8-3 decision.
Bentworth 46, Fort Cherry 30: Bentworth rode five pins and two technical falls to a 46-30 victory over Fort Cherry in Class 2A Section 1.
Max Ivcic (121), Ben Luketich (133), Joe Pantalo (139), Brayden Taggart (160) and Alex Rusilko (Hvy) recorded the pins for Bentworth. Owen Ivcic (145) and Vitali Daniels (189) each won via technical fall.
Fort Cherry had pins by Drake Buzzard (114), Ethan Faletto (152) and Braedon Welsh (172).
