High school softball

Carmichaels scored six runs in the second inning and cruised to a 13-3 victory over Leechburg Thursday in the quarterfinals of the WPIAL Class A softball playoffs.

The Mikes (17-0) face Frazier (14-1) in the semifinals with the day, site and time to be determined. By reaching final four in the WPIAL, both teams have qualified for the state tournament.

Carlee Roberts had three doubles and knocked in two runs for Carmichaels. Teammate Sophia Zalar had three hits, including a double, and knocked in two. Ali Jacobs and Kaitlyn Waggett doubled, and both had two hits.

Bailey Barnyak struck out 14 and walked four in earning the win.

  • Waynesburg scored three runs in the sixth to rally for a 3-2 victory over Ligonier Valley in the quarterfinals of the WPIAL Class 3A playoffs on Thursday at West Mifflin.

The Raiders (16-3) will play Southmoreland (15-2) in the semifinals with the date, site and time to be determined. Waynesburg qualified for the state playoffs by reaching the final four.

The Raiders’ Emma Zehner hit a two-out three-run double to right field that plated Gina Tedrow, Hannah Wood and Kayleigh Varner.

Abbi Davis followed with a double to center field, but Zehner was thrown out at the plate. Tedrow started the rally with a double before Wood was intentionally walked and Varner drew a base on balls.

Kendall Lemley earned the victory after striking out five. She allowed two runs on six hits over seven.

Cheyenne Piper took the loss, but she struck out 12. Piper also had two hits.

  • Greensburg Central Catholic scored three runs in the seventh and held off a Charleroi rally for a 4-3 victory in the quarterfinals of the WPIAL Class 2A playoffs Thursday at Norwin.

The Cougars (16-3) had a 2-1 lead entering the seventh. McKenna DeUnger hit a home run in the fourth and Madalynn Lancy added one in the seventh.

Emma Stefanick had multiple hits for Charleroi.

Cougars starting pitcher Sophia Celaschi took the loss but she had 13 strikeouts.

  • Neshannock showed why it is the No. 1 seed in Class 2A after a 10-0 victory over Burgettstown Thursday in the quarterfinals of the WPIAL playoffs.

The Lancers (18-0) hits two home runs and had five doubles. Neshannock scored six runs in the fifth to turn a close game into a rout.

KatieRose Smith had two hits, including a triple, for the Blue Devils (12-8).

High school baseball

Chartiers-Houston had a 6-3 lead after four innings, but Ligonier Valley rallied back for a 9-8 victory in the first round of the WPIAL Class 2A playoffs Thursday at Gateway.

The Buccaneers (16-4) had a 3-1 advantage after scoring two runs in the second and one in the third, but the Rams (12-7) responded with a six-run fourth for the three-run cushion.

Ligonier Valley scored four in the sixth and one in the seventh for an 8-6 advantage before Chartiers-Houston added two in the bottom of the frame to send the game into extra innings, where the Rams added one more run for the triumph after holding the Bucs scoreless in their half of the inning.

Luke Camden had three doubles and drove in two runs for Chartiers-Houston. Teammate Keegan Kosek had two hits, including a double, and two RBI. Teammate Dominic Cumer tripled and knocked in three runs.

The Bucs’ Anthony Romano had four singles. Ryan Opfer and Jake Mele had two hits apiece.

The Rams play New Brighton in the quarterfinals. The date, site and time have yet to be determined.

  • Avella’s rally came up short in a 6-4 setback to Rochester Thursday in the first round of the WPIAL Class A playoffs.

The Eagles (10-6) had a 1-0 lead in the first inning after three straight singles with two outs, including the first of three hits by Colton Burchianti, who had an RBI.

The Rams (10-7) scored two in the fourth and four in the fifth before the Avella scored three in the sixth.

Isaiah Bradick had two hits for the Eagles.

  • South Side Beaver sent nine batters to the plate and scored five runs in the fourth inning and earned an 8-3 victory over Bentworth in the first round of the WPIAL Class 2A playoffs on Thursday.

Benjamin Hays and John Scott had two hits apiece for the Bearcats (9-10).

Luke McCoy struck out eight, walked one and pitched five scoreless to earn the win for South Side.

  • Michael Cahill shut down Waynesburg’s offense, as East Allegheny blanked the Raiders, 6-0, on Thursday in the first round of the WPIAL Class 3A playoffs at Boyce-Mayview Park.

Cahill allowed two hits in seven innings while striking out 12 and walking two.

Mason Switalski had one of Waynesburg’s two hits. The Raiders finish their season at 9-7.

  • Vinny Sarcone’s walk-off single rallied Peters Township to a 5-4 victory over West Allegheny on Wednesday night in the first round of the WPIAL Class 5A playoffs.

PT (16-4) plays Penn-Trafford (13-5) in the quarterfinals on Monday at West Mifflin. The first pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.

West Allegheny defeated Peters Township, 5-4, in eight innings to win the WPIAL title a year ago.

PT trailed 4-0 after three but scored one in the sixth and four in the seventh.

Joey Bedillion had three hits, including two doubles, and knocked in three runs. Sarcone and Jack Lutte had two hits apiece.
