Penguins blanked on Nova Scotia Showdown

HALIFAX, Nova Scotia – The Oattawa Senators scored two first-period goals and added an empty-netter to beat the Pittsburgh Penguins 3-0 Monday night in a preseason game.

The contest was dubbed the “Nova Scotia Showdown” and was played in the home province of Penguins captain Sidney Crosby.

Both teams sported lineups featuring mostly NHL regulars adding some intensity to the intimate environment.

Senators forward Ridley Greig let rip a perfectly placed shot, beating Penguins goalie Tristan Jarry and giving Ottawa a 1-0 lead.

A second goal. credited to Brady Tkachuk, would squeeze it’s way past Jarry to give the Senators a 2-0 lead.

The Penguins were behind by a pair of goals, but were dominating in shots for a majority of the period with a 14-9 lead after 20 minutes.

Pittsburgh had a pair of power play opportunities in the second period and were 0-for-6 in the game.

The Penguins pulled Jarry with about three minutes to play and shortly afterward Ottawa’s Tim Stutzle scored an empty-net goal.

Prior to the game, the Penguins claimed forward Jansen Harkins off of waivers from the Winnipeg Jets.

Harkins, 26, spent the 2022-23 campaign split between the Winnipeg Jets and the Manitoba Moose of the American Hockey League. With Winnipeg, Harkins notched five points (3G-2A) in 22 games.

He also established AHL career highs in goals (25), assists (25), points (50) and was plus-11 in 44 games.

The 6-2, 197-pound forward has played parts of four seasons in the NHL with Winnipeg, appearing in 154 regular-season games and registering 13 goals, 14 assists and 27 points.
