Boys soccer: Belle Vernon wins section title
Belle Vernon clinched the outright Class 2A Section 3 title with a 4-0 win Thursday night over visiting McGuffey.
The Leopards (13-1, 14-2) led by only 1-0 at halftime before pulling away with goals by Tim Reda, Brandon Yeschenko and Trevor Kovatch in the second half. It was Kovatch’s second goal of the night.
• Peters Township routed Hempfield 6-0 in Class 4A Section 2 action.
The Indians (9-10-3-1, 11-3-1) generated goals by Brett Martin, Nathan Froelich, Connor Heinsen, Dean Cada, Matthew Pollock, and Brady Utchel.
• Goals in the first half by Andy Palm and John Garcia gave Trinity the lead and the Hillers went on to a 3-1 win over Laurel Highlands in Class 3A Section 3.
Tyler Johnson added a second-half tally for the Hillers, who improved to 8-5-1.
• Mount Pleasant was a 3-0 winner over host Waynesburg in Class 2A Section 3.
• Yough was a 5-1 winner over Washington in Class 2A Section 3.
• Beth-Center used goals by Mikey Rodriguez and Nekoda Bundy to pull out a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Ligonier valley in Class A Section 2.
The win evened B-C’s section record at 5-5. The Bulldogs are 10-6 overall.
• Bentworth forged a five-goal halftime lead and went on to a 6-1 victory over Chartiers-Houston in a non-section contest.
Ryan Colbert had three goals and Dillan Colbert added two for the Bearcats, who are 13-2.
Ryan Moessner had a goals and assist for Bentworth. John Scott assisted on three goals and Coltyn Lusk had two helpers.
