Name: Brooke Vowcheck

School: Peters Township

Class: Junior

Sport: Golf

Vowcheck’s week: Vowcheck carded a 1-over-par 72 on the Red Course at Cedarbrook Golf Course to help Peters Township to its second consecutive WPIAL Class 3A Girls Golf Team Championship last Thursday.

Vowcheck’s score was not only the top round for her team, but she tied Seneca Valley senior Lihini Ranaweera for medalist honors.

“It was a pretty good day and one of my better rounds,” Vowcheck said. “My iron shots were pretty good and I was able to save par and make several birdie putts.”

Vowcheck was even-par through the first nine holes, as she birdied the par-five 2nd and the par-three 3rd. On the back nine, Vowcheck birdied the 16th hole (par four) and was 1-over with a 37.

Peters Township also qualified for the PIAA Class 3A team tournament in earning the WPIAL gold.

“It is exciting to win our second straight WPIAL title and get to play at states again,” Vowcheck said. “I also qualified individually as a freshman, so it will be my third time playing at states.”

Ready for 18: In the regular season, teams play either the front or back nine of a course during a match, but in the postseason, the rounds are increased to 18 holes.

That can be problematic for golfers who don’t have experience playing 18 holes, but Peters Township always prepares for the postseason by competing in invitationals and other tournaments where the rounds are 18 holes.

“That is something that really helps our team,” Vowcheck said. “We play tournaments in the offseason over 18 holes, and we also have some in-season in addition to our nine-hole matches. It is fine to play a front or back nine, but I really believe we set ourselves up well by playing in those 18-hole events.”

Third-generation golfer: Vowcheck’s began playing competitively when she was 10-years-old and is following in the footsteps of her grandfather and father.

“It is nice because we can talk about the game and what is needed,” Vowcheck said. “My grandfather has told me that he always believed I could make it as a golfer.”

Next level: Earning a scholarship and playing in college is something Vowcheck is striving for. Her academic prowess, however, remains her top priority.

“School comes before anything else,” Vowcheck said. “I always wanted to do something in the medical field. I was thinking about being a physician’s assistant.”

Golfing favorites: Rory McIlroy, Jordan Spieth and Tiger Woods are some of Vowcheck’s favorite professional golfers. She doesn’t have much time for other activities after school and golf, but she will play a round or two of miniature golf with her friends.

“Mini-golf is really fun to play,” Vowcheck said. “After playing competitively and having to be focused all the time, it is nice to just relax and play for fun.”
