Monessen’s Hawkins passes for 361 yards, 5 TDs
MONESSEN — Dennis Hawkins passed for 361 yards and five touchdowns as Monessen kept its playoff hopes alive with a 36-20 victory over Mapletown in a Class A Tri-County South Conference game Friday night.
Hawkins threw a scoring pass of 61 yards to Tyvaughn Kershaw 29 seconds into the game, then hooked up with Lorenzxo Gardner for TDs covering 37 and 96 yards to give the Greyhounds (2-4, 3-5) a 22-0 lead. Hawkins threw his fourth TD pass, to Kayden Kolbeck, covering 26 yards, to make it 30-0.
Hawkins completed 17 of 27 passes.
Mapletown (1-5, 3-6) battled back, getting a five-yard TD pass from A.J. Vanata to Evan Griffin with one second left in the first half. Griffin then added a 42-yard TD run only 25 seconds into the third quarter to trim Monessen’s lead to 30-14.
Hawkins then threw his fifth TD pass, this one to Kershaw, covering 14 yards, with one second left in the third quarter.
Mapletown capped the scoring when Griffin scored his third touchdown, a 65-yard pass from Vanata.
