W&J holds off Case Western Reserve

Washington & Jefferson came out of the gates swinging and held on for a 38-33 victory over Case Western Reserve in Presidents’ Athletic Conference play on Saturday at Cameron Stadium.

Jacob Pugh scored on a four-yard run and threw a five-yard pass to John Peduzzi for a 14-0 lead in the first quarter.

Noah Coyne gained six of his game-high 258 yards when he pulled in a touchdown reception from Alex Fromberg six seconds into the second quarter.

Presidents kicker Ricky Hunter booted a 33-yard field goal with 10:17 left in the second quarter to increase the lead to 17-7 before Kobe Derosa returned a block punt five yards into the end zone to push the W&J advantage to 24-7 with 9:15 left before halftime.

Coyne pulled in his second touchdown reception from 23 yards out to cut the deficit to 10 before halftime. Teammate Ethan Dahlem caught a 7-yard touchdown pass with 11:30 left in the third quarter to cut the deficit to 24-20.

The Presidents (6-2, 6-2) responded with two straight touchdown receptions from Jacob Macosko of 9 and 47 yards to push their lead to 38-20. Macosko caught 7 passes for 107 yards.

Coyne pulled in his third touchdown reception from 37 yards out with 13:31 left in the fourth quarter and Gage Duesler made things interesting on a 3-yard run with 6:20 remaining.

Pugh was 20 of 35 for 275 yards with four touchdown passes and no interceptions.

California 58, Mercyhurst 19: Mercyhurst had a 13-point lead in the first quarter, but once California got going, there was no stopping the Vulcans in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference victory Saturday afternoon at Adamson Stadium.

Trailing 13-0 with 1:41 remaining in the first quarter, California cut the deficit to six following a 1-yard run by Eric McKan III and Anthony Beitko kicked the first of six PATs.

Eric Willis III caught a 40-yard pass from Davis Black at 12:35 of the second quarter to tie the game at 13-13. McKan III’s six-yard run put the home team ahead, 20-19, with 3:41 remaining before halftime.

California (6-2, 5-1) scored three touchdowns before the break, which started with Matt Tobey’s 34-interception return. Jack Colecchi caught a 32-yard touchdown pass from Black and D’Avay Johnson pulled in a 38-yard reception from Black as time expired in the second quarter.

Geneva 43, Waynesburg 29: Waynesburg had the lead heading into the fourth quarter, but Geneva outscored the Yellow Jackets by 26 in a Presidents’ Athletic Conference victory Saturday afternoon at John F. Wiley Stadium.

Geneva scored the first touchdown on John Syster’s 42-yard run at 11:40 of the first quarter before Waynesburg’s Justin Flack, Dakota Romantino and Isaac Trout found the end zone for a 20-7 lead with 10:26 left in the second quarter. Flack scored on a 1-yard run before Romantino (83 yards) and Trout (19 yards) pulled in scoring receptions from Samuel Barber.

Barber was 12 of 16 for 221 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions, but had to sit out the fourth quarter with an injury.

Syster’s 18-yard run with 1:58 left before halftime and Waynesburg had a 20-14 halftime advantage.

Trout pulled in a 26-yard reception for a score and a 26-14 lead with 10:57 left in the third quarter before Geneva started its fourth-quarter run.

Jordan Wilmore (11 yards), David Reid III (1 yard) and Logan Kent (10 yards) reached the end zone for a 36-26 with 7:24 remaining.

Rico Sastoque kicked a 22-yard field goal with 3:44 left to pull the Yellow Jackets within seven, but Reid III’s 22-yard run dashed Waynesburg’s hopes of victory.
