Westminster takes control in 4th to defeat Waynesburg

Waynesburg University did its best to make scores with Westminster during Saturday afternoon’s Presidents’ Athletic Conference game at John F. Wiley Stadium, but the Titans seemed to have a response for every Yellow Jackets’ score in a 31-20 victory.

Chevy Dawson opened the scoring when he pulled in a 34-yard touchdown reception from Ty McGowan at 4:54 of the second quarter. Ben Pugh made the first of four PATs for a 7-0 lead for Westminster (2-2, 2-2).

Rico Sastoque’s 23-yard field goal with 2:03 remaining in the second period cut the deficit to 7-3, but the Titans responded with another touchdown, as Taite Beachy caught a 20-yard pass from McGowan with 25 seconds left before halftime and the visitor’s had a 14-3 advantage at halftime.

Waynesburg (0-4, 0-4) got within four at 12:46 of the third quarter on Xavier Nelson’s 48-yard reception from Samuel Barber. Nelson was the game’s leading receiver with 3 catches for 92 yards, and Barber was 19-of-33 for 261 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions.

Pugh kicked a 36-yard field goal at 7:19 of the third before Sastoque connected on a 25-yarder with 40 seconds left in the period, and the Titans held a 17-13 lead after three quarters.

Ryan Gomes (4 yards) and Jordan Lowe (9 yards) scored rushing touchdown in the fourth quarter that provided Westminster with a 31-13 cushion. Gomes had 136 yards rushing on 29 carries.

Hunter Cameron caught a 4-yard pass from Thomas Burke with 1:02 remaining in the fourth.

The Yellow Jackets are at Thiel (1-3, 1-3) next Saturday for a PAC contest. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m.
