Highlanders win Chartiers-Houston Tournament

McGuffey earned a pair of shutouts to win the Chartiers-Houston Tournament this weekend in girls soccer action.

The Highlanders (2-0-0) defeated North East (Erie) Saturday morning, 3-0, before blanking the host team, 3-0, Sunday afternoon for the championship.

McGuffey keeper Miranda Weaver stopped five shots against the Buccaneers (1-1-0) and four against North East.

Malia Burt, Hannah McDonald and Madison Crowe each scored a goal in the win over Chartiers-Houston. Jenna Pattison and Cora Thomas had one assist apiece, while Crowe bent her tally into the goal from a corner kick.

McDonald was named the player-of-the-game against the Buccaneers. Burt scored twice against North East, and Ella Wolfe also found the back of the net.

Wolfe assisted on Burt’s brace and Crowe had a helper on Wolfe’s tally.

McGuffey hosts Keystone Oaks on Wednesday to open Class 2A Section 1 play.

Chartiers-Houston 1, Steel Valley 0: Ava Capozzoli received a pass from Celicia Hess and scored the lone goal 14:08 into Saturday’s non-section match against Steel Valley in the Chartiers-Houston Tournament.

The Buccaneers’ backline and keeper Seanna Riggle were instrumental in recording the clean sheet.

Peters Township 4, South Fayette 2: Peters Township spread around the scoring in the Indians’ victory over South Fayette in the season opener Saturday afternoon in non-section girls soccer play at Confluence Financial Partners Stadium in McMurray.

Marina Hajnosz, Paige Malley, Julia Spergel and Camryn Klein had one goal apiece as Peters Township downed the defending WPIAL Class 3A champion.

Taylor McCullough and Ava Hanjosz had assists for the Indians.

Molly Kubistek earned the victory at keeper.

Peters Township (1-0-0) plays Penn Trafford (0-0-0) on Monday in non-section action. South Fayette (0-1-0) hosts West Allegheny (0-0-0) on Wednesday in non-section play. Both matches are scheduled to kickoff at 7:30 p.m.

Boys soccer

Ringgold 4, Elizabeth Forward 3: Nick Evans scored the match winner in the 17th minute of the second half on Saturday in the Moe Rosensteel Memorial Kickoff Classic at Joe Montana Stadium.

Michael Stasko assisted on Evans’ goal, which was his second of the match.

Elizabeth Forward (0-1-0) opened the scoring at the half-hour mark before Evans finished a cross from Jack Brodak to tie the match 66 seconds later.

Lucas Wukovich, who was named the player of the game, got behind the Warriors’ backline, and scored at 18:29 of the first half for a 2-1 Ringgold lead. Izaiah Wilson assisted on the tally.

Elizabeth Forward tied the match with 15:33 remaining in the first half.

Wukovich’s brace provided the Rams (1-0-0) with a 3-2 advantage within the first 10 minutes of the second half after receiving a pass from Brodak before the Warriors added the equalizer at the 16-minute mark.

Ringgold returns to the pitch on Tuesday at Albert Gallatin in a Class 3A Section 2 match at Albert Gallatin.

The match helped contribute to the Moe Rosensteel Foundation, which was created to celebrate the life of Ringgold soccer player Kaitlyn “Moe” Rosensteel, who died in June of 2019.

Peters Township 6, Beth Park 0: Alex Parise recorded a hat trick in the Indians’ non-section victory on Saturday.

Brett Martin, Jeven Kelly and Carter Helbig also scored for Peters Township, who will travel to defending WPIAL champion Norwin on Tuesday in non-section play.

Bentworth 3, Trinity 1: The Bearcats topped Class 3A Trinity on Saturday in the Canon-Mac Showcase.

The WPIAL Class A defending champions took a 2-0 halftime lead before the Hillers scored.

Ryan Moessner had two goals and Andrew Vipperman added a tally. Adam Moessner, Dillon Colbert and Isaac Reynolds had assists on Bentworth’s goals.
