PT, Ringgold swimmers have good days

PITTSBURGH – Peters Township and Ringgold had strong showings Thursday on the opening day of the WPIAL Swimming Championships at Pitt’s Trees Pool.

The top local finisher was Peters Township freshman Ava Komoroski, who placed third in the Class 3A 50-yard freestyle with a time of 23.72. The event was won for the third time by Mt. Lebanon’s Sylvia Roy, in a blistering 22.84.

Komoroski’s teammate, junior Lauren Opitz, placed fourth in the 100 butterfly with a time of 57.42.

South Fayette’s Zoe Poe finished fourth in the Class 3A girls 200 freetstyle in 1:54.72.

The only other top-5 finish came from the Ringgold boys 200 freestyle relay team. The Rams placed fifth in Class 2A. The team of Brandon Nguyen, Tyler George, Benjamin Carpeal and Gionni Traeger touched the wall in 1:29.91.

Nguyen had a 10th-place finish in the 200 freestyle (1:48.90), Nguyen was 10th in the 50 freestyle (22.62), Carpeal was eighth in the 200 individual medley (2:01.27) and Traeger was 10th in the 200 freestyle (1:48.90). The Rams are 12th in the team standings after the first of two days of competition.

Ringgold’s Natalie Noll placed seventh in the girls 100 butterfly in 59.51.

Also in Class 2A, Belle Vernon freshman Megan Schusteric was eighth in the girls 200 freestyle, setting a school record of 1:58.50. She also was part of the Leopards’ 200 medley relay team that placed seventh.

Peters Township’s boys 200 medley relay team placed 10th in Class 3A, matching the finish of the Indians’ 200 freestyle relay team.

The PT girls are seventh in the team standings with 73 points. North Allegheny has dominated the event and is in first place with 301.5 points.
