W&J men get past Franciscan in overtime

Matthew Carte didn’t mind working overtime Saturday afternoon.

Carte scored seven of his nine points in the extra period to help Washington & Jefferson secure an 86-82 win at Franciscan (1-1, 5-2) in Presidents’ Athletic Conference play.

Carte had half of Washington & Jefferson’s points in overtime, which was needed because the game was tied 72-72 at the end of regulation.

Alex Acosta led the Presidents (2-0, 7-2) with 30 points and Matt Siedl scored 20. Nathan Plotner contributed a double-double with 18 points and a dozen rebounds.

Sawyer Butler had 24 points for the Barons, who held a 42-38 lead at halftime.

California 72, Bloomsburg 52

Antoine Arnett led a balanced scoring effort for California in a 72-52 win at Bloomsburg Saturday in a PSAC crossover game.

Jordyn Buchanan sank five three-pointers for 15 points, Bryson Lucas added 14 points and Joshua Ray scored 12 for the Vulcans (1-0, 3-4).

Cal led for the duration and took a 34-22 advantage into halftime.

Courtney Davis II and Ries Naugle scored 10 points each for Bloomsburg (0-1, 2-4).

Saint Vincent 84, Waynesburg 80

Despite hitting 11 three-pointers, Waynesburg fell short in an 84-80 loss to Saint Vincent in PAC action.

The Bearcats (1-0, 4-3) led the final 13 minutes of the game and had a lead as big as 10 points. Waynesburg (0-2, 3-7) got to within four points late, but that was as close as it got.

Jackson Rhodes had 18 points and Jalen Goins scored 17 to lead the Yellow Jackets. Both hit a trio of three-pointers. Grant Barnhart and Cam Danser scored 11 points each off the bench.

Maxwell Gordon scored 24 points for the Bearcats, who went 23-for-27 from the foul line.

Women’s Results

Washington & Jefferson 83, Franciscan 47

Washington & Jefferson improved to 7-1 overall and 2-0 in PAC play by routing Franciscan 83-47.

Riley DeRubbo and Katie Kovalchik scored 21 points each for the Presidents and Jaden Wan scored 13.

W&J raced out to a 16-7 lead in the first quarter and cruised from there.

Magdalen Simon led Franciscan (0-2, 3-8) with 11 points.

California 70, Bloomsburg 59

Trinity Balog and Macy Sardone contributed 16 points apiece to lead California (1-0, 4-6) to a 70-59 win at Bloomsburg (0-1, 4-2) in PSAC play.

The Vulcans sank five three-pointers and had five players in double figures.

Alica Young scored 14 points, Hope Hawkins had 12 and Kimaya Wiliams finished with 10.

Ava Stevenson scored a game-high 20 points for Bloomsburg.

There were very few foul shots in the game. California went 3-for-4 at the free throw line and Bloomsburg 4 of its 6 attempts.

Saint Vincent 75, Waynesburg 73

Emerson Peffer and Danielle Pontius made free throws in the final minute to help Saint Vincent (2-0, 6-3) escape Waynesburg (1-1, 3-5) with a 75-73 win in a PAC game.

Peffer nailed two free throws to give the Bearcats a 72-71 lead. Pontius canned two more with 24 seconds remaining and another one with six seconds left.

Waynesburg’s Kara McFadden launched a three-pointer that missed as time expired.

McFadden, Julez Mohrbacher and Macie Justice had 16 points apiece for the Yellow Jackets. McFadden and Justice made four three-pointers each.

Brooke Evans scored 18 for Saint Vincent.
