High school basketball roundup: Waynesburg rallies to edge Charleroi

Waynesburg overcame a double-digit deficit and rallied for a 68-65 home-court win over Charleroi in a Class 3A Section 4 boys basketball game on Monday night.

Waynesburg (2-0, 4-4) trailed 27-14 at the end of the first quarter. However, the Raiders turned the game around by holding Charleroi (0-2, 4-5) to only three points in the second quarter as Waynesburg took a 31-30 lead into halftime. The Raiders pushed their lead to 48-45 after three quarters and both teams scored 20 points in the final period.

Waynesburg placed five players in double figures led by Dane Woods’ 19 points. Cole Headlee and Jackson Dean each had 13, and Austin Surber and Ace Litwinovich tallied 10 apiece. Woods was credited with 20 points and Dean had 10.

Xavion Thomas scored a game-high 27 points for Charleroi and Mikey Lee netted 11.

Girls results

Seton LaSalle 64, Waynesburg 49

Casey Davis and Ava Maroney combined for 47 points, powering Seton LaSalle to a 64-49 victory over previously undefeated Waynesburg in a Class 3A Section 3 game played on the Rebels’ home court.

Seton LaSalle (4-0, 6-2) pulled away in the second half after taking a 29-27 lead into halftime.

Davis led the charge for SL by scoring 27 points that included seven three-point field goals. Maroney, a freshman, added 21 points.

Waynesburg was led in scoring by freshman Tess Pauley, who flipped in 19 points. Freshman Emma followed with 13 points and senior Peyton Cowell had 10.

Belle Vernon 70, Elizabeth Forward 56

Belle Vernon pulled away in the second half for a key 70-56 road win over Elizabeth Forward in Class 4A Section 3.

Belle Vernon (4-1, 6-2) led 32-31 at halftime but outscored EF (3-1, 6-3) in both the third and fourth quarters.

Isis Almighty led Belle Vernon’s attack with a career-high 22 points and Lyla McConnell tossed in 20. Saylor Lee had 11.

EF’s Mia Sostaric tallied a game-high 25 points.

West Greene 59, Monessen 21

A balanced scoring effort and some strong defense powered West Greene to a 59-21 victory over visiting Monessen in Class A Section 2.

West Greene (3-1, 7-2) started quickly, racing out to a 27-5 lead at the end of the first quarter. Jillisa Yeater led the Pioneers with a game-high 15 points. Kendra Tharp had a double-double of 13 points and 13 rebounds. Kate Brudnock scored all 11 of her points in West Greene’s big first quarter.

West Greene held Monessen (2-2, 2-4) to nine points in the second half, including zero in the fourth period. Over the last three games – all section contests – West Greene has allowed only 14 second-half points.

Madison Johnson’s nine points were tops for Monessen.

Beth-Center 53, Jefferson-Morgan 20

Mary Bower scored 17 points – all but two from behind the three-point line – as Beth-Center defeated Jefferson-Morgan 53-20 in a Class 2A Section 3.

Bower’s long-range shooting helped B-C (1-1, 2-5) race out to a 30-9 halftime lead. Bower made five three-pointers in the game and was helped in the scoring column by Violet Trump’s nine points.

Jefferson-Morgan (0-2, 4-3) was led by Ava Wood’s 10 points.

McGuffey 69, Brownsville 35

McGuffey scored 43 points in the first half and went on to a 69-35 victory over visiting Brownsville in Class 3A Section 3.

It was the fourth win in a row for surging McGuffey (3-0, 6-3). The Highlanders led 17-11 at halftime and outscored the Falcons 26-6 in the pivotal second quarter for a commanding 43-17 halftime advantage.

Maura Janovich paced McGuffey with 17 points and Lucy Weiss followed with 15.

Ava Clark scored a game-high 27 points for Brownsville (0-4, 2-6).

Chartiers-Houston 55, California 27

Chartiers-Houston played three strong quarters of offense and four quarters of defense en route to a 55-27 home-court win over California in Class 2A Section 3.

C-H (2-0, 7-1) forged leads of 14-6 after one quarter, 32-10 at halftime and 48-19 heading into the final period.

Ava Kolovichy had a game-high 18 points to lead the Bucs and Ali Wingard continued 14 points.

Lyla Mitchell’s 10 points were top for California (1-1, 2-6).

Bentworth 43, Carmichaels 20

Bentworth remained unbeaten in league play with a 43-20 road win over Carmichaels in Class 2A Section 3.

The Bearcats (2-0, 5-3) did much of their damage in the first half as they opened a 32-6 lead at the intermission.

Bella Moyer led Bentworth with 16 points and Bre Dillon had 12.

Joselyn Carter netted six points for Carmichaels (0-2, 1-7).

Fort Cherry 70, Brentwood 23

Fort Cherry scored 52 points in the first half, building a 46-point lead, and going on to a 70-23 thumping of Brentwood in Class 2A Section 2.

Fort Cherry (2-0, 4-4) led 21-4 after one quarter and 52-6 at halftime over the Spartans (0-2, 0-9).

Gianna Bianchini led a blanched FC attack by scoring 15 points. Brooke Cornali chipped in with 14 points and Allison Litman had 12.

Geibel Catholic 67, Avella 17

Emma Larkin scored 26 points, leading three Geibel Catholic players in double figures as the undefeated Gators defeated visiting Avella 67-17 in Class A Section 2.

Geibel (4-0, 9-0) led 23-1 after one quarter and 48-8 at halftime.

Mallory Clemmer scored 18 points and Alex Morgan netted 16.

Dakota McCullough’s 12 points led Avella (1-3, 3-6).

In other games

Keystone Oaks was a 54-22 winner over the Charleroi girls in Class 3A Section 3. South Fayette’s boys rallied for a 43-39 win at Baldwin. No game details were available at press time.
