Small college basketball: Cal erases 20-point deficit, stuns Slippery Rock

Donald Whitehead had 33 points and six assists, helping California to a remarkable comeback and an 86-73 victory Saturday at Slippery Rock in a PSAC West men’s basketball game.
The Vulcans (9-7, 14-10) trailed by as many as 20 points late in the first half before rallying. Cal outscored The Rock 50-29 in the second half.
Cam Polak had 20 points and made three of Cal’s 12 three-point field goals. Whitehead made four from behind the arc. Kadyn Hannah added 19 points and 10 rebounds, and Dalman Alexander grabbed 14 rebounds.
Day Waters scored 29 points to lead three players in double figures for Slippery Rock (7-8, 11-12), which shot 22 percent in the second half after leading 44-36 at halftime.
Saint Vincent 93, Wash & Jeff 90
Mike Iuzzolino scored 21 points, leading five Saint Vincent players in double figures, as the Bearcats held off Washington & Jefferson 93-90 in a Presidents’ Athletic Conference game in Latrobe.
Despite 11 straight points by W&J (12-5, 16-6), the Presidents were unable to grab the lead in the closing seconds as they missed a three-pointer with two seconds to play.
W&J’s Nathan Plotner and Quinton Burlenski both matched Iuzzolino for game scoring honors with 21 points. Plotner had a game-high nine rebounds (six offensive).
Cameron Rowell added 17 points for the Presidents and Matthew Carte had 11.
Westminster 79, Waynesburg 72
In a PAC game that featured 24 lead changes and 13 ties, Westminster made the final surge and beat host Waynesburg, 79-72.
Waynesburg falls to 5-11 in the PAC and 7-14 on the season. Westminster works a split of the season series to move to 4-12, 7-14.
Neither team led by more than two possessions until the final minute of regulation.
Waynesburg’s Antone Baker scored a game-high 22 points to go with 19 rebounds. Jaylen Davis scored 13 points for the Yellow jackets, and Jalen Goins and PJ Suggs had 10 each.
Drew Weir had 20 and Mick Hergenrother 19 for Westminster.
Women’s results
Wash & Jeff 54, Saint Vincent 36
Senior point guard Adalynn Cherry pumped in a career-high 22 points and Washington & Jefferson turned in another lockdown defensive performance to secure a 53-36 win over host Saint Vincent in a PAC game.
The win improves the Presidents to 16-1 in the PAC and 19-3 overall. Saint Vincent is 11-5, 12-9.
Cherry made eight of 13 shots, including six of nine from three-point range. Stellanie Loutsion was the only other W&J player to score in double figures. She had 13 points. Meghan Dryburgh dominated on the backboards, grabbing 18 rebounds.
The Presidents led 25-14 at halftime as Saint Vincent made only four of 29 shots.
No Saint Vincent player scored more than nine points.
California 79, Slippery Rock 56
Senior Talia Gilliard scored 15 of her career-high 30 points in the fourth quarter as California posted a 79-56 victory at Slippery Rock in PSAC West action.
The Vulcans (9-7, 13-10) were playing their first road game in two weeks Cal remains in fifth place in the division standings. The Rock (4-11, 7-14) has lost six consecutive games and has not won a division game since Jan. 6.
Kimaya Williams had 12 points, and Iyahnna Williams and Sierra Bermudez added 11 each for the Vulcans, who led 53-47 after three quarters and outscored The Rock 26-9 over the final 10 minutes.
Waynesburg 76, Westminster 61
Mia Henkins had 15 points, Clara Paige Miller and Madisen Dayton each added 11 and Waynesburg defeated Westminster 76-61 in a PAC game.
Waynesburg led 27-18 at halftime and then scored 49 points in the second half. The Yellow Jackets (6-10, 11-10) made 10 three-point shots.
Westminster is 3-13, 3-18.
