Waynesburg works overtime to beat St. John Fisher

Waynesburg erased a 16-point deficit and defeated St. John Fisher 75-73 in overtime to win the championship game of the season-opening Hawks Against Hunger tournament in Hamburg, N.Y., on Saturday night.

Waynesburg is off to its first 2-0 start since the 2013-14 season.

The Yellow Jackets trailed 43-29 at halftime and by as many as 16 points early in the second half. A 12-0 Waynesburg run pulled the Yellow Jackets to within one point and they took their first lead of the game at 69-68 with 1:07 remaining in regulation on a three-pointer by Jalen Goins.

A free throw by St. John Fisher sent the game to overtime,

Baskets by Casey Keesee and Jackson Rhodes gave Waynesburg the lead in the OT and the Yellow Jackets never trailed again.

Scott Bilovus led Waynesburg with a game-high 22 points, including five three-pointers. Goins scored 11 points and Keesee had 10.

Lancaster Bible 92, Wash & Jeff 88:

Washington & Jefferson was edged in its season opener at Lancaster Bible, 92-88, Saturday.

Five Presidents scored in double figures led by Michael Plasko, who had a career-high 23 points. Matthew Carte followed with 19 points to go with seven rebounds. Quinton Burlenski chipped in with 14 points, Nathan Plotner had 12 points and five blocked shots, and Alex Acosta tossed in 11 points.

W&J led 42-40 at halftime and forged a 13-point advantage midway through the second half. Lancaster Bible battled back and took a three-point lead with five minutes remaining.

The Presidents led 86-85 with 1:23 left after a three-pointer by Burlenski, but Lancaster Bible used a three-point play by Connor Storr with 34 seconds remaining to take a 90-87 lead and then sealed the win at the free-throw line.

Women’s results

Ferris State 83, California 55; Minnesota State 98, California 53:

California finished off a tough weekend at the Conference Commissioners Association Division II Tip-Off Classic with a 83-55 loss to Ferris State at Edinboro.

The Vulcans went 0-3 on the weekend.

Kennedy Bankett led Cal with 18 points. Cal trailed for the duration and was down 39-28 at halftime.

Things didn’t go any Saturday.

Facing the top-scoring offense in the country from last year, California dropped a 98-53 contest to preseason No. 15 Minnesota State.

The Vulcans were outscored 34-11 in the second quarter and went into halftime trailing 52-19.

Alicia Young scored 19 points to lead Cal in scoring. Bankett added 12 points.
