Washington & Jefferson tops 21st ranked Maryville
It was a good weekend for the Washington & Jefferson men’s basketball team as the hosts of the Great Lakes Invitational.
A night after beating Case Western Reserve the Presidents topped 21st ranked Maryville, 79-75, at Salvitti Family Gymnasium.
Noah Plotner led the way for the Presidents (5-2) with a double-double. He had 23 points and 11 rebounds.
Matthew Carte added 17 points, while Quinton Burlenski, Michael Plasko and Cameron Rowell scored 10 each for Washington & Jefferson, which led 45-35 at halftime.
The Scots took a brief lead late in the second half, but Carte nailed a three-pointer to put the Presidents ahead 76-75. Carte and Plotner sank free throws down the stretch to get it back to a two score game.
Jackson Garner paced the Scots (6-2) with 19 points.
The Presidents used a 24-13 advantage in points off turnovers as a separator.
Concord 81, California 79
Kraig Gilbert hit a game-winning three-pointer at the buzzer to lift Concord to an 81-79 victory over California.
Gilbert collected a rebound with five seconds remaining off a missed free throw, dribbled down the court and launched an off-balanced shot that was nothing but net. It finished off a 24-point afternoon.
The shot capped a 7-0 run to finish the game for Concord (2-2).
Antoine Arnett made a jumper to give the Vulcans (1-3) a 79-74 lead with 1:34 remaining.
Arnett had a game-high 26 points.
Oberlin 108, Waynesburg 69
JJ Gray and Augustus Donohue had 17 points apiece and Oberlin rolled past Waynesburg 108-69.
Donohue made five three-pointers for the Yeomen (5-2).
Zach Smith added 15 points and Milun Micanovic scored 11 for Oberlin, which led 52-28 at halftime.
Scott Bilovis led the Yellow Jackets (3-4) with 13 points and Brady Anderson scored 10.
Women’s Games
West Chester 64, California 36; California 79, Wilmington 58
California had a weekend split, winning 79-58 at Wilmington on Saturday and falling 64-36 at West Chester in a PSAC crossover game Sunday.
The Vulcans (3-5) were held to single digits in three of the four quarters against West Chester (2-2) and shot only 20-percent from the field.
Things went much better Saturday.
Kennedy Bankett had a game-high 24 points to help California top Wilmington (0-4) in a nonconference game.
The Vulcans used a 24-11 advantage in the third quarter to pull away. Alicia Young added 16 points and nine rebounds, Jalasia Hull scored 14 and Trinity Balog came off the bench to score 12.
Reynah Ratliff led Wilmington with 10 points.
Cortland 74, Washington & Jefferson 62
Jackie Funk sank four three-pointers and had 16 points to help seventh-ranked Cortland (3-2) secure a 74-62 win over Washington & Jefferson (4-1) Saturday at the Marietta Classic in Ohio.
Riley DeRubbo led all scorers with 19 points. Stellanie Loutsion scored 14 points and Jaden Wan had 12 off the bench for the Presidents, who went 3 for 11 from three-point range.
Penn State Behrend 87, Waynesburg 74
Despite canning a dozen three-pointers, Waynesburg (1-3) dropped an 87-74 decision to Penn State Behrend Saturday.
Kalista Friday and Mia Henkins hit four 3-pointers apiece and Clara-Paige Miller and Kara McFadden connected on a pair.
Friday had 19 points and Henkins scored 14.
Julia Balaski led Penn State Behrend (2-2) with 22 points.
