Whitlock scores two TD’s to help IUP top Cal in Coal Bowl
INDIANA – Belle Vernon grad Devin Whitlock played a major role in helping Indiana take down California in the 16th Coal Bowl Saturday.
Whitlock caught a pair of touchdown passes and the Crimson Hawks beat the Vulcans 38-30 Saturday at George P. Miller Stadium.
It’s the first time in three years IUP (3-1 PSAC, 5-2) has beaten Cal (2-3, 5-3).
Whitlock caught a five-yard touchdown pass from Matt Rueve in the second quarter which gave Indiana a 21-14 lead.
Cal kicker Harry Radcliffe connected on a 21-yard field goal in the final minute of the second quarter to cut the deficit to four going into halftime.
Deontae Williams returned the second half kick off 94 yards for a touchdown which gave the Vulcans a 24-21 lead, but that was their last touchdown.
Rueve hit Whitlock for a four-yard touchdown that gave IUP the lead 28-24. The Crimson Hawks never trailed again.
Whitlock had a team-high nine receptions for 69 yards.
Tavion Banks added a 14-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter for IUP.
Phaeton Hill passed for 214 yards, but Cal struggled to get its run game going, finishing with only 58 yards rushing on 24 attempts.
